Template-protected edit request on 6 December 2019[edit]

Please add shortname alias = Micronesia. Guarapiranga (talk) 07:45, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 18 December 2019[edit]

Please add shortname alias = Micronesia per WP:CONCISE (no other country is called Micronesia so the prefix is superfluous). Some user unilaterally changed it back without discussion. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 18:14, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. This shortname alias has been in place for five years prior to the change in July. Using "Micronesia" as the shortname was already discussed at Talk:Federated States of Micronesia#Country data template, the consensus seemed to be to not have that as the alias. Further discussion should take place before changing this. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:08, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Consensus is only required for controversial edits. Users @Guarapiranga:, @MSGJ:, and myself have no problem with such an edit, which seems to me to show that it is uncontroversial and consensus enough. If it matters any, I was the one who added the current shortname alias in the first place. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 23:33, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Per that talk page discussion and Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2012 July 29#Template:Country data Micronesia, the use of "Micronesia" as the shortname does seem to be controversial. I tend to agree with the rationale of the TfD nominator, therefore it would be better to discuss further. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:42, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That was 10 years ago, S.A._Julio. The arguments there refer to the official name; the shortname alias is not that. The official name of Brazil is Federated Republic of Brazil, but of course no one knows it as that. That's not even Brazil's primary alias on WP. That's inconsistent. If there is ambiguity with the name of the region, then WP has other protocols for WP:DISAMBIG'ing, as done with  Georgia (country) and  Georgia (US state). MSGJ, Illegitimate Barrister, Chipmunkdavis[1] and I seem to agree on this; are you the only one disagreeing? — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 (talk) 00:35, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
MSGJ does not necessarily endorse all changes he makes. Izno (talk) 02:12, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done I have no ball in this fight and am willing to implement this change, so I have done so. S.A. Julio, I expect that if you want to change this to the way you seem to want it, you should probably obtain active consensus for your version (either alias with F.S. prepended or lacking the alias altogether). Rename File:Flag of Federated States of Micronesia.svg to File:Flag of the Federated States of Micronesia.svg Rkt2312 (talk) 01:51, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: no need to rename this, because the redirect to the correct flag image is WP:NOTBROKEN. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 07:39, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
