Wording[edit]

Could we tweak the wording here so it results in:

OLD: 12 Paintings by Charles Walter Simpson at the BBC Your Paintings site
PROPOSED: 12 paintings by Charles Walter Simpson in UK public collections at the BBC Your Paintings site

@Pigsonthewing:, @Magnus Manske: How about a variant of this to show "Paintings in the xxx collection at the BBC Your Paintings site"? Eg http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/galleries/locations/keswick-museum-and-art-gallery-6090 for the article Keswick Museum and Art Gallery. I've not done much with templates so it seemed better to ask a template geek or two to have a go: any interest? Could call it "YourPaintingsCollection"? PamD 09:48, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sculptors now in the scope[edit]

Given that Art UK now gives IDs to sculptors as well as painters, the word "paintings" is not a good idea in this template. Should be "artworks", say. Having looked at the source, it seems clear that the relevant text cannot be edited here. Someone who knows the dependencies could presumably sort this issue out. Seconded - I want to include a link to https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/view_as/grid/search/makers:alison-wilding-b1948, a set of sculptures. Other "types" included in the ArtUK database include photographs, drawings, textile art etc, so "artworks", their own term, seems the best to use. PamD 18:13, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I had hoped to be able to achieve the desired effect by "subst"ing the template - and it looks as if I could have done so up to Jan 2017 at which point the template became very complex and involved links to Wikidata so that it's now impossible for a template amateur like myself to see where the word "painting(s)" comes from. Pinging those who have edited the code of the template in the hopes that one of them can help: @Jheald, Zyxw, Pigsonthewing, Frietjes, and Magnus Manske:. User:PamD the word "painting" is set by Template:Art UK bio/plural and while this template has the option to override the word "painting" the main template does not have this feature. we could either (a) make the default "artwork" or (b) add an optional |type=artwork and |type=sculpture to override on a per-article basis. @Frietjes: Thanks. Personally I'd think defaulting to "artwork" makes more sense, as that's what ArtUK uses, but that might need more discussion as it would affect the appearance of all the existing uses of the template and might upset some editors. @Frietjes: Thanks. Hmm, shouldn't it say "artworks" in the plural? And, more importantly, it doesn't seem to work:

User:PamD a google search for "plural of artwork" indicates that either can be used see here for example, but have changed it to add the s. as for the id, try it without that parameter, which uses WikiData. Frietjes (talk) 18:45, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Frietjes: Looks good, thanks, I see you've fixed it for Alison Wilding. But what would happen if her article was at "Alison Wilding (sculptor)" so that we'd have needed to use that parameter? (In cases like this I tend to be cautious and use a parameter so that if the page gets moved at a later point, because it is decided that this isn't the primary topic, the link won't be broken, rather than relying on using page name). User:PamD, see Michael Andrews (artist) the template uses {{PAGENAMEBASE}} which removes the dab, and the link is specified in the wikidata, which is uniquely attached to an article. if you see the incorrect artwork count, then you need to update the entry in the corresponding wikidata page, or use |nocount=y to remove the count. Numbers of artworks — Auto Updating?[edit]

Hi all, I've noticed the number of artworks displayed by this template no longer matches the number of artworks on Art UK.

For example, the template {{Art UK bio}} on the David Hockney page displays:

   "34 artworks by or after David Hockney at the Art UK site"

However, there are currently 51 such artworks on Art UK.

@ArtDataArt: No, there's no auto-updating. In the past ArtUK cooperation was ... limited, so these figures are from a website scrape, now some years ago. It's possible Art UK might now give us a spreadsheet; but most likely a new scrape is needed. HTH, Jheald (talk) 15:30, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
