... that despite being a widow with two small children and breaking her back while trying to complete her master's degree, Virginia Cutler received a Ph.D. from Cornell and became an internationally renowned home economist?

This article is new enough and long enough. In places, the article is written in a non-encyclopedic style; "1935 found Virginia Cutler and her two young sons on the way to California"; "raising her two sons while juggling a growing professional career, a career that was about to extend to the international sphere"; "an endeavor that was wildly successful". I mention this, but I don't think it is a bar to DYK. Most of the sources were unavailable to me so I was unable to check for copyright issues. I am unhappy about the proposed hook because it places the masters degree and the PhD in close proximity whereas in fact they were separated by eight years. How about ALT1? ALT1 ... that before becoming an internationally renowned home economist, Virginia Cutler was widowed, raised her two small children alone and broke her back while trying to complete her master's degree?
- The article doesn't mention her Master's degree at all; the hook fact needs to be cited in the article. "Internationally renowned" is a peacock term which may not be applicable to "home economics". I assume she was successful in completing her Master's degree, so there's no need to hedge with "trying"; incidentally, that phrasing seems to imply bizarrely that she broke her back as a result of trying to complete her degree rather than due to an unrelated car accident. How about
- ALT2: ... that Virginia Cutler completed her Master's degree despite being widowed, raising two small children alone, and breaking her back?
