Schreber's yellow bat, White-bellied yellow bat

5x expanded by Cwmhiraeth (talk). Self-nominated at 20:03, 7 September 2019 (UTC).

    • Is this hook all that hooky? To the regular reader, it just says that a bat might be similar to another bat. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:54, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
    • The sources actually say it's likely it isn't a carnivore but an insectivore. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:54, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
    • outside of this, both articles were expanded 5x and nominated in time; QPQ is done and no copyvio found. If the hook could be sorted, this one would be fine. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:54, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
Well, most vesper bats are insectivores, and I have not previously come across any that are carnivores. Then again, I like including two articles in one hook because it helps prevent the nomination page from becoming bloated. Some people like to get hooks changed on the grounds of interestingness, but that is very subjective. I could separate this into two hooks, but it would be difficult to find an interesting hook for Schreber's yellow bat, a bat species which seems to be poorly known. What about: ALT1:...despite most vesper bats being insectivores the Schreber's yellow bat may be a carnivore like the white-bellied yellow bat, which has eaten geckos and dead bats in captivity? - which would explain why this was notable. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 16:32, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
Looking at the page Vespertilionidae, I see that it states "All species are carnivorous and most are insectivores". I had wondered about that, but the source book was distinguishing between carnivory and insectivory. I will need to think again. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:50, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
I cannot think of anything better and think the original hook is satisfactory. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:42, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
I don't really see how it explains anything to someone who knows nothing about bats. I'll have an ask and see what someone else thinks. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:35, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
Could we go with something that was based on the weird bat cannibalism? This seems like the most hooky thing to me. What about:
ALT2: ALT1:...despite most vesper bats being insectivores the Schreber's yellow bat may eat dead bats like the white-bellied yellow bat?
This seems really hooky to me. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 21:57, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
Or perhaps we could reword ALT2 to something like:
ALT2a ... that despite most vesper bats being insectivores, the Schreber's yellow bat and white-bellied yellow bat may eat dead bats?
About my only concern with this hook is that "bat" is mentioned several times, but per WP:LIMITED it's probably unavoidable. Disclosure: Lee and I discussed this nomination over at Discord. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:21, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
Reading both articles again, and it seems that we're both mistaken, as it is only the white-bellied bat that has eaten dead bats in captivity. If this is the case, we could instead reword the original hook into something like:
ALT3 ... that although the white-bellied yellow bat has been observed to eat dead bats in captivity, the related Schreber's yellow bat is believed to be an insectivore?
ALT3a ... that although the Schreber's yellow bat is believed to be an insectivore, the related white-bellied yellow bat has been observed to eat dead bats in captivity?
It might be a good idea to focus on eating dead bats instead of the gecko as that's probably a lot more unusual. I'm not sure how to mention vesper bats in the new suggestions, though. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:26, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
I don't believe it is necessary to mention vesper bats at all. I am happy with ALT3 and ALT3a. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:05, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
New reviewer needed to check ALT3 and ALT3a. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 20:17, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
Is that necessary? I'm happy with Alt3 and alt3a. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 20:42, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
It's needed as users who proposed hooks aren't allowed to review them (unless the new hook is simply a rephrasing of an already approved hook). Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 21:32, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
Both ALT3 and ALT3a are verified. Either hook can be used. SL93 (talk) 06:17, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
