Hu Yan[edit]

  • ... that the "barbarian" Hu Yan was praised as one of the best advisors and military strategists of ancient China?
    • ALT1:... that Sima Qian listed Uncle Fan beside Sun Tzu as the most famous soldiers who "developed and threw new light on the principles of war" in ancient China?
    • ALT2:...that the Duke of Jin supposedly rewarded Yong Ji more for advice the duke ignored than he gave Hu Yan for advice that won him the Battle of Chengpu and hegemony over ancient China?
    • ALT3:...that Confucius thought it was proper that the Duke of Jin rewarded Yong Ji more than Uncle Fan, but Han Fei considered it a classic example of bad management?
    • ALT4:...that, when Prince Chong'er fell into a state of idleness, he was forced back into activity by his wife and his uncle Fan, who got him drunk and kidnapped him?
    • ALT5:...that Hu Yan won praise as a loyal and capable advisor in part by getting his prince drunk and kidnapping him?
    • ALT6:...that Uncle Fan considered a dream where his lord was getting his brains sucked out by the Duke of Chu as a good omen?
    • ALT7:...that, when the Duke of Jin dreamed that his enemy was sucking out his brains, Hu Yan was able to convince him that it was good luck?
    • ALT8:...that Jie Zhitui's disgust at Hu Yan’s humility caused him to withdraw from society, ultimately inspiring China's Cold Food and Tomb-Sweeping Festivals?
    • ALT9:...that, when a peasant offered Prince Chong'er a clod of earth instead of food, Uncle Fan kowtowed to the farmer in thanks and packed the dirt away?
    • ALT10:...that, when Uncle Fan‘s father refused to tell his sons to leave Prince Chong'er's service, the prince's nephew executed him?

  • Comment: Note to potential reviewers: Don't worry—you just need to review the hook(s) that are most interesting to you.
Also, pending some improvement in his ability to process DYK entries, User:Zanhe should just choose another entry to review.

What a life! On good sources, offline Chinese and French sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. Please add refs for the last sentences in the first two sections of "Life". The lead image shows nothing that size, and the map at the bottom might also be larger.
I left the original, a bit general hook, and the cute ALT5. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:32, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
