The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (transl. Tamil Nadu Victory Federation; abbr. TVK) is a political party in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. It was founded by actor-turned-politician Vijay on 2 February 2024.[4]

History[edit]

On 26 June 2009, Vijay launched his fan club- Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, in Pudukkottai to carry out philanthropic activities one month after the decisive end of the Sri Lankan Civil War, the military subjugation of the Tamils on the island.[5][6] The organization supported the AIADMK-led alliance in the 2011 legislative assembly elections.[7] The organization contested in the local body elections in Tamil Nadu in October 2021, securing victory in 115 out of the 169 contested seats.[8][better source needed] On 2 February 2024, Vijay announced the launch of his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.[9][10] Political analysts suggested that, the TVK party might undergo its expansion to other states of India including North in the near future.[11] Vijay deemed CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) 2019 passed by the ruling authority of India as unacceptable as it will disrupt the social religious harmony of the nation.[12]
