The World's Only Hygiene, not a widespread view[edit]

I'll have to check the source to see in what context the comment was made, but it still does not logically follow that from a single letter that 'war as hygiene' was a widespread view. In fact, I think you'll find that it was not a widespread view, especially among artists, and that a number of people found Futurist views reprehensible. Kruchenykh had strong words about Marinetti's militarism. I'm putting this as a comment for now, since I need to locate sources. However, I will make changes.

"When war broke out in 1914, Marc joined the army voluntarily and with great enthusiasm. He was one of those artists who took a very rosy view of the war and saw it as a great communal adventure that would cleanse and renew society. "This is the only way of cleaning out the Augean stable of Europe," he wrote to Kandinsky, "or is there a single person who does not wish this war might happen?" Dietmar Elger, Expressionism, p163. 'Unlike many of his contemporaries, including intellectuals and artists, he (George Grosz) did not welcome the war either as a "purifying sacrifice" or as a patriotic duty.' Ralph Jentsch, George Grosz p22. I'll see if I can pinpoint specific views of the rest of the European avant-garde.
