List of youth subcultures[edit]

JenLouise, since you are interested in this stuff, please take a closer look into the List of youth subcultures. Someone "cleaned it up" and deleted lots of useful information. It particular, may I ask you to restore very useful brief descriptions of list entries, which you may find, e.g., in this version of the list. `'mikka (t) 18:58, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia lists aren't supposed to have descriptions and definitions. That's what articles are for. Lists are only supposed to have links to other articles.Spylab 19:18, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Spylab[reply]

That's not actually true. If you go to the Wikipedia guidelines on list articles it says that one of the format currently used is glossaries - a type of annotated list, where the annotations are definitions of the list's entries. Example: Glossary of philosophical isms. Perhaps the name needs to be changed to Glossary of youth subcultures, but the guideslines don't say that it has to be called this to have definitions. I think the list of article would make much more sense with definitions, and even though people may not agree initially, eventually with enough people working on it some sort of consensus could be reached regarding acceptable definitions. I'm going to go back and add the descriptions, and if there's any disagreement then the name of the article can be changed to "Glossary of youth subcultures". But I'll start that the discussion on Talk:List of youth subcultures. I'll also add the list of highschool subcultures as a separate list and then people can debate on its talk page about integration etc. JenLouise 05:32, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of youth subcultures is a list of links to articles. If someone wants information about specific subultures, they just click on the links. Cluttering up the list page with descriptive paragraphs is unnecessary. Also, there is no point in listing supposed subcultures that nobody has decided are notable enough to warrant their own articles. Spylab 11:36, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaned up this article[edit]

main article tag[edit]

The main article template is used when the content of one article is a summary of the information contained in another article. It is generally used in summary-style articles that contain an overview of an area and then direct the reader to an article that looks at the topic in-depth. That is not the case with the Youth culture and Youth subculture pages. Youth subcultures and youth culture are two different concepts, and though related, if anything youth culture (if the article was in better condition) might contain a summary of youth subculture and then have a main article tag leading to this article, not the other way round.

I have reordered the See Also list so that the two most pertinent articles, youth culture and subculture are at the top. (I know some people like them alphabetical, but I think order of importane is more useful to the reader.

Merge from High school subcultures[edit]

I've taken some of the text from the article and included it in its own little section here. That section on movies I think is useless so I didn't move it across. I'm just going to move the whole list to the List of youth subcultures page as a separate section, delete the overlaps and then start a proper discussion on the talk page. Intro[edit]

I think some of the content in the intro needs to be moved to the main article. It seems pretty long and alot of the stuff in the intro is not repeated/expanded in the article. Any ideas? JenLouise 00:06, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stereotyping[edit]

I've noticed in some examples of the sub cultures, it shows things such as clothing, hair, make up, etc. This is a stereotypical teen. What's this about? I am nearly a teen myself, and I care a little about fashion stuff. For example, some teens like child care, politics, independence, getting good grades, literature, etc.

Features of youth subcultures[edit]

Have tried to make this section more readable, through a list. I plan to expand this section as soon as I can dig up some old references. Also, I temporarily removed the following section, as it does not actual describe 'features of youth subcultures' or even features of music-based youth subculture. Will Straw described a music scene as "that cultural space in which a range of musical practices coexist, interacting with each other within a variety of processes of differentiation, and according to widely varying trajectories of change and cross-fertilization."<ref>Straw, Will (1991). I turned the bullet lists back into a proper paragraph, since this is an article, not a list. I suppose the Will Straw reference can be used as a footnote for the sentence he term scene can refer to an exclusive subculture or faction. Scenes are distinguished from the broad culture through fashion; identification with specific (sometimes obscure or experimental) musical genres or political perspectives; and a strong in-group or tribal mentality. Why should that deletion be as such? It's quite clear that teenagers in Western society at like this.

Stop redirect from Youth Culture[edit]

This is focused too much on Europe[edit]
