Fair use rationale for Image:X3 Ingame Shot.jpg[edit]

Image:X3 Ingame Shot.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Terrans link[edit]

XenonSlayer, the link you gave for "Terrans" didn't actually point anywhere. There's currently no page by that name on Wikipedia. It's a deadlink. For the meantime, just so it points somewhere, I pointed it to the Terrans on the list of races page. But looking around, I get the feeling this is a work in process, so I made this in a 2nd edit so you can easily revert me if/when you make a "Terrans (X)" page. The Zig (talk) 19:11, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

I've not listed all that I think should be merged, just a few to give an example of the sorts I'd like to see brought across. The problem is that, as standalone articles, many of the articles related to this one have no real world notability outside of the fantasy world. A merge into this article would not only prevent that, but I believe it would make this article better Whitstable (talk) 15:42, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... I see where you're coming from. I'm not sure. My main argument against this is that if we put everything into one monster page, it becomes less accessible and more cluttered.
I didn't set up the current pages, but I do think spreading info across pages makes it easier for people to see specifically what they want to see, and at the level of detail they want to see it. I agree about notability, but I do think the X games are sufficiently notable to warrant their place. And the notability page says they don't limit article content. I don't quite know how they divide 'article' and 'content', but, there's game content that stretches across all 3/4 games (eg. races). So I'd think it makes sense for them to have their own page (rather than having largely the same info cluttering four different pages). I would consider all of this - the X universe, the X races - as supplementary content for each games' article. IMO this warrants their placement.
Looking around, lots of games seem to take this view. Deus_Ex has in-depth pages for its protagonist, supporting, major and even a lot of very minor characters. Similar thing for The Elder Scrolls, Star_Control, Mario and the Princess. But because this content has its own page it doesn't get in anyone's way. Thus Wikipedia can have expert-level depth and detail, without cluttering the casual browser with trivia.
However, this is a general opinion. In the case of the X it does seem rather strung out. Maybe a compromise would be best. Perhaps, incorporate the race pages [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] into the race listing, and the X-Universe page into this one, and leave it at that. That way we pull the info together better, while managing to stay informative and manageable. Whaddaya say?
ps. I'd like to see Xenon Slayer's response before anything gets changed though, as s/he seems to have put more work into these pages than anyone.

That sounds like a fair idea - merge the races into the list, then the setting into the game. Think that way the remaining pages would also be improved - be easier to compare and contrast the races on one page, rather than clicking across a variety of articles. Hi Everyone. Quite a few of these articles are a work in progress. To be honest I have borrowed the format used by several other game pages such as the Halo Series and Mass Effect. The race list will be expanded as there are a few races still to be added. The race pages themselves such as the Boron Kingom may grow themselves with a picture of the race and a much better worded description. In the end there will be about 15 races in the list, with about 10 race pages (of notable ingame races). The missing articles will be created soon. Give me until the 4th please. Thanks for all the input.
p.s I agreee that the X Universe fictional setting should be merged. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Xenon Slayer (talkcontribs) 16:25, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

X Universe (fictional setting): merged[edit]

Okay, I just merged in X Universe (fictional setting). Think I did all the steps from the merge list for a full-content paste. Then I did a lot of cleaning up. I tried to do this all real quick, and in parallel so the section was only messed up for literally about a minute, so do let me know if I did anything wrong. And of course look for any mistakes/typos I missed. I'm not sure about the last subsection bit, I just included it because I didn't want to delete it. However, as hard as I tried, it still feels like idle speculation. Let me know what you think. The Zig (talk) 12:41, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Back to that merge discussion[edit]

Hi. I notice we've got a possible deletionist circling! A few of the race pages have been tagged as uncited - which is certainly true. It's also unresolvable. Simply put, I doubt we can find independent sources for each individual race. I doubt there are any newspapers/magazine (even computer game mags) that mention individual races, and I don't think anyone's written a scholarly article about the Split! Egosoft's manuals and magazines do not count for notability (they only count for verifying content), thus we cannot use these to save the articles.

I strongly suspect this is a prelude to a WP:PROD. If it comes, we could remove the prod, but looking at the mood over on AfD lately, the individual race pages don't have a snowflake in hell's chance of making it through. If we merge them into just the list of races page, I think we've got a damn good argument (as the races - collectively - are mentioned in a several articles, making them notable, and they span all the games, making it practically redundant to put them into every game's own article). As such I think we should move ahead with the merge sooner rather than later.

Thoughts? The Zig (talk) 10:01, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

May have a go at this merge in the next few days for the reasons given above. If you object, speak up now! The Zig (talk) 21:59, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support a merge. Sometimes that's the best way to save an article's content if that article raises notability concerns with the broader wikipedia community. Randomran (talk) 17:51, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
