Is the mentioning of StarForce really necessary?[edit]

Mentioning a copy protection technology within the first two paragraphs of the article is not particularly necessary. People who mainly complain about it have questionable roles. You may as well mention that to install most games you must type in a CD key from the back of the CD case - just as irrelevant to the wiki article. Beugnen 11:54, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is probably noteable as the use of StarForce is controversial, your claim that these people have 'questionable' roles aside. Not in the first two paragraphs obviously but probably in the article. Your comparison to a CD key is a bit ridiculous, a CD key does not force you to install device drivers which by their nature are designed to take away control over your computer and it is rare that CD keys cause problems (whereas it's well documents that copyprotection software does cause problems with certain configs, including obviously Wine) beyond perhaps the BioShock limited activations debacle. BTW, in future please add new messages to the bottom not the top Nil Einne (talk) 13:13, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mention of StarForce is certainly relevant, as it was the key factor in my decision not to purchase this game. That, along with the amount of time required to get the game in working order is likely why I never got into the series. I'm sure I'm not alone.24.17.218.20 (talk) 20:35, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Added Plot Info[edit]

It's too long though. Maybe someone can cut some of it without damaging it too much. I'm not too good at that area. --MercZ 08:27, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

'Khaak Attack Image' free source image fine in reference to game, supplied copyright free digitalvip@hotmail.co.uk, was not up loaded correctly at first, is not an image for deletion look @ Major contributions to article. Then think again Jonny B so call Good.

Neutrality of Release Issues section[edit]

The Release Issues section reads as if it were written by an Egosoft PR marketroid. Anyone care to neutralize it? -- BobbyPeru 14:22, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll give a go at cleaning up the couple of "problem" lines.

Patches and compatibility[edit]

Added the following (new patch on it's way): "A patch is expected at some point during Q4, which will remove the need for the CD/DvD on boxed versions, and add significant amounts of new content.".

I also removed the following: "Boxed versions of the game are not compatible with the Steam system." All savegames made with the boxed version are totally compatible with the Steam system, as are mods for the game, provided both run the same game version number. You cannot patch the Steam version with the boxed version's patches, however, as they use different copy protection/media systems (obviously).82.27.20.170 22:04, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article needs work[edit]

Hi. I just came to read the article and I'm dissapointed. This article reads like a fan page rather than an encyclopedia article. The synopsis needs the following:

  • What kind of game is this? What similarities does it have to previous games.
  • What is the basic setting of the game?
  • Move copy protection information from the synopsis into the body.

Also needed:

  • Substantially reduce the Storyline section. A reader does not want to know about the whole story, and when cutscenes will occur.
  • This game is catagorized as Category:Space trading and combat simulation games, which was how I found it. I couldn't find any mention of these game elements (no- I didn't read the spoiler section, so don't mention it).
  • Also, remove the "hints and tips" and "spoilers" sections- they don't belong here, just link to them.

I've come to read this article as well and I find it to be very informal. It needs to despirately be edited by someone with capable hands. This game is too great to have an article that scratches 'Start' on the scale of quality. Klichka 00:08, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

more needed[edit]

I'm quite surprised there's no mention of the game's huge level of moddability (is that a word?). Factories, ships, missiles and everything can be changes within the game and total conversions are entirely possible. May be an idea to look on the game's forums (egosoft) to see the ton of work the fans do with the game.Yeebok 13:16, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Web ressource[edit]

I have deleted the "no update since may 06" mention on the "Argonopedia" link, because even if the first new of the page is dated of "may 06", the third is "november 06". (the first two are just "sticky"). Judging by the forum, the website is still pretty much alive.

The Argonopedia is one of the best places to get information on the X-Universe but the X3 section is not complete. I know the websites creator and while the forums are active, new information on the X games are slow to filter through. As the X3 section is not available I will remove the link. It will stay on the other X Game pages. Xenon_Slayer 14:09, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What Genre is this Game[edit]

No were in the article does it say if its a RTS like homeworld or a flight sim like X-Wing Alliance? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tjb891 (talkcontribs) 22:23, 16 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

It says it on the info-box at the top of the article.--MercZ 16:39, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plot section reduced[edit]

In order to adhere more cloesely to wikipedia's policies, I've reduced the plot section I added previously. Expand upon it if you wish, but not to the level it was previously. --MercZ 16:39, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work. A lot more manageable now.

Current Status of the Article[edit]

Even though it still has a ways to go, I think the page is expanded well beyond the point of needing the tag for that kind of improvement.--MercZ 03:49, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, scratch that. Someone restored the whole damn plot section from last time I reduced it. We don't need that. --MercZ 05:04, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

X3 map v1.2 by Scorp[edit]

Hello. My suggestion is to add

  • X3 map v1.2 by Scorp ( the best program to show your actual X3 map, with detailed information about most in-game objects )

to the "Resource Sites" section of the article.

X3 map v1.2 by Scorp was released by Egosoft in the "X3 Reunion: Game of the Year 2007 Edition". This program is the very popular among the X-community.

Here is the discussion topic at egosoft.com forum http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=166320

Clean up[edit]

Hi, I just did some clean up for the article (it needed it) I fixed the part about the Mac OS X-Intel (???) and removed the part about the gameplay in the early part of the article. I could not find any part about the article being written like a strategy guide. I also removed the section on the copy protection, totally irrelevant to the article. Might as well say that most games have a CD code. If u have any questions please visit my talk page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by GlassDesk (talkcontribs) 23:44, 29 November 2007

Hey, I did some further clean up. Hope you don't mind, but I changed the ordering. I thought starting with the stuff about versions and the various historical teething problems was a bit strange - it's no longer relevant, and frankly, who's gonna care? For anyone who buys it now, it's not an issue. It sounded like wikipedia was just being used to grind an axe. So I moved the 'Updates' section down under the general description of the game. I also brought the updated manual part into this section.
I don't think having a gameplay section at the start is a problem, lots of games have this (Deus Ex, Elite, Devil May Cry) - some kind of overrview is what most people would be looking for. Though maybe this one could use a little re-writing.
All: I think the problem here is that about half our page is dry technical description of stuff from the game - ship classes and what-nots. With no real introduction, and heavy on detail, it reads more like a page from a manual than an encyclopedia entry. It'd be like talking about the grammar of Klingon on the main Star Trek page, is it what the casual reader is looking for when they click here? This is all good stuff, but maybe it needs its own page?
It'd also be nice to see the plot written up as narrative - a story - rather than a series of bullet points (eg. see Devil May Cry, Deus Ex, Max Payne). This'd be my wish-list. Cheers The Zig (talk) 09:21, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
More cleanup work done. I fixed a few grammatical mistakes, and reorganized the stuff between "Jump Gates" and the ship table. The top headers at least match up at the top of the page now. I fixed a couple problems in the ship listing; M2 and M6 ships could dock other ships in X2, but they can't in vanilla X3. The plot summary needs to be rewritten as a paragraph instead of bullet points; also, please disregard wiki policy and put a plot spoiler warning in front.RabidDeity (talk) 03:00, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ref Table error[edit]

Not the abandoned ships list has at least one error, it lists the Buster Sentinel in Akeela's Beacon at -30, -10, -30 when it is at 30, -10, -30 (at least in v2.5, might have moved I suppose). --86.144.20.95 (talk) 03:29, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

some body has apparently put a advertisement in the reference tables area

Redirect link fixed[edit]

I fixed the double redirect from X3_Reunion —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.91.250.124 (talk) 23:23, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism[edit]

I'm surprised that there's no criticism section in here. I've heard so many people complaining about the dire state of instructions and documentation (i.e. none) that came with this game. - Burningmace 23:36, 17 January 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Burningmace (talkcontribs)

Article name[edit]

I've moved the article back to its official name per the guidance at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (video games), which states that unofficial titles are not acceptable. The rationale for moving in the first place was that users may find ³ difficult to type, but this is negated by the redirect. That is, after all, the whole point of redirects - so users do not have to type the exact title to find the page they were looking for. AJCham 04:12, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In-house Linux port[edit]

As they are currently working on an in-house Linux version (based on the LGP port), maybe it's worth mentioning this in the first paragraph to avoid confusion? I'm not very good in formulating this kind of information, so I would appreciate if someone else figures a way how to include it. --93.104.42.218 (talk) 01:09, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
