The pronunciation of Wu's name[edit]

Chinese people now usually call him as Wu Changshuo, because 硕 in modern Chinese is read as shuò. However, in the age of Wu, 硕 was read as shí. Wu called himself as changshi too, not changshuo. He signs on his works sometimes 昌石 due to the same pronunciation of 石 and 硕. I believe the reason for the dispute over the pronunciation of Wu's name is the enactment of 国音常用字汇 in 1932. Wu lived before 1932, but not far from 1932, so his accent was the same as that of now Chinese, the only difference is the pronunciation of Chinese characters. So, I think we better call him as what he called himself. Another famous example is the dispute over 陈寅恪's name, he called himself Chen Yinque, but modern Chinese pronunciation is Chen Yinke.Sacha (talk) 17:53, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
