The second sentence says Matthews was "influential in the establishment of Catholicism in Washington, D.C." The problem with this formulation is that it sounds like Catholicism became the established (state) religion of the District, which I don't believe is true. Is it really necessary to have the same note included three times? "[a] The Matthews surname is spelled in some contemporaneous sources as "Mathews".[1][2]" appears three times in the first five paragraphs, including two successive paragraphs.
