Wikiproject Alabama[edit]

I'm removing the wikiproject alabama link -- W.H. Hardy was only born in Alabama, but has no significance to the state. He is notable for his work in Mississippi, not Alabama. /Blaxthos 21:01, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if it isn't Blaxthos ;-). I've re-added {{WikiProject Alabama}} after discussing it with group members. Had I realized you were the "editor" I was referring to, I probably would have just dropped by your talk page. Anyhow, Hardy was born and raised in Alabama, and including him within our project is based on this; not necessarily from where his notability stems. Condoleezza Rice was my example: born and raised in Birmingham, Al, Rice is included within the project even though her notability is not directly related to Alabama. WikiProjects are fairly comprehensive, so only good can come from inclusion. Side note: you without question have email. - auburnpilot talk 02:40, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No problem -- I didn't realize the Wikiproject had such a broad scope; I had assumed (shame on me) that it was only aiming to include things that have specific/notable impact on Alabama. I do have a few suggestions to improve this article:
  • Hattiesburg was founded by hardy; the name Hattie's-burg is so named for his wife (or so the story goes -- seems plausable)
  • The major east-west artery through Hattiesburg is named Hardy street, in deference to the founder.
  • I believe there is also a public school in Hattiesburg named after Hardy -- I'll have to check.
I'm sure there are other improvements to be done -- I'll see if I can't stop by a local library or perhaps public records downtown and see if I can find some reliable sources with some more information; it will probably be a while before I can do so. How come we cross paths so much? And how come I'm an "editor" (in quotations) now -- is that a good thing?  ;-) /Blaxthos 03:13, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

/Technically/ references to Alabama could stay: Hardy's first involvement with a railraod was as a co-counsel for the Alabama Southern; in that capacity he found funding to complete the road. As far as the naming of the city, I think my edit made that more clear; Hattiesburg was named for Hattie, specifically; I added the reference to Hardy Street and his naming of Laurel and Gulfport as well. As far as the High School, I've never come across a school named for him explicitly.Khowell (talk) 05:47, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Source of This Article[edit]

Though this article is factual, it appears to be a word for word a duplication of the biography of Mr Hardy on the city of Gulfport, Mississippi's web site William H Hardy.

Even though this article is fine for Gulfport's web page about one of the city's founding fathers, it needs to be wikified at the very least. Jacksinterweb 17:44, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm new to wiki... mainly because of this page; I'm writing my MA thesis on the G&SI and realised, as mentioned above, that the entry here was a cut-and-paste from the Gulfport webpage. I added many of the requisite references to my edits, although I don't quite know how to add references to the Hardy papers at the University of Southern Mississippi, of which there are several, or to Toney Hardy's "No Compromise".
