Name[edit]

This page should be renamed "William & Mary Athletics." William & Mary's editorial guidelines explain to refer to it by this name, not as "William & Mary Tribe."

Colors[edit]

So since I don't know much about W&M, I have a question about colors. Does athletics use different colors than the academic side? If I go off of the logo, than yes it does. Which for the green hex code I get (using DigitalColor Meter) is #0F4F39 and the gold is #F0B323. I cannot find colors for athletics when I search both websites, and the only thing I find is the University colors. If someone can help me out, that'd be great!   • To be clear (and this is not yet a !vote) we don't base our naming off the institution's own style guide, but rather common usage in reliable sources. While official usage is certainly a compelling argument if common usage isn't clearly one way or another, it is not the sole factor.--Yaksar (let's chat) 23:52, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Makes sense. I'd say that the official style guide is the best bet for this one since there are several unofficial monikers in current use as well as historic ones. These could be described in the article. Despite the multitude, it doesn't appear that this article's title, "William & Mary Tribe," is used as widely as some alternatives. For example, the source https://tribeathletics.com[2] currently shows on its front page "Athletics," "W&M," "Tribe," "Tribe Athletics," "William & Mary Tribe Athletics," and "W&M Athletics," but not "William & Mary Tribe" (without "Athletics" at the end), which is this article's name; the page title in the HTML for that source is "William & Mary Athletics," which is what I've proposed according to the editorial guide. A student news paper, The Flat Hat, appears to prefer simply "Tribe" [3].   • Oppose. First, not only is Tribe the common name, but it is the official name per the W&M Athletics Style Guide. Quoting from that document: "William & Mary Athletics is firmly committed to remaining the Tribe. This brand evolution does not intend to do away with Tribe, but rather intends to elevate the university name." Second, this change of article name would be misleading.     Digging further at the tribeathletics.com website[5]: "The William & Mary Athletics official nickname is the Tribe. Tribe is singular and not plural. While the Griffin is the official mascot of William & Mary Tribe Athletics, do not reference teams or the school as the Griffins." Consistency with other university articles, where the format is [shortname] [nickname], says this article should be titled "William & Mary Tribe". I do not see a compelling reason to make this an exception—and if it is to be an exception, I have to ask if we wouldn't be better off to lowercase "athletics" to avoid ambiguity. —C.Fred (talk) 01:18, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • While I agree that "Tribe" (which is a different styling from "William & Mary Tribe") is a common name, the authors of that style guide refer to themselves as "William & Mary Athletics" and "W&M Athletics" (on the title page) but never "William & Mary Tribe," and the quote "William & Mary Athletics is firmly committed to remaining the Tribe" affirms that "Tribe" is a monkier for William & Mary Athletics. 2600:8805:3800:1880:0:0:0:BA0A (talk) 00:43, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • To add to the above, Williamsburg Yorktown Daily explained in 2018 "The statue is a griffin, William & Mary Athletics’ mascot since 2010." [6] A statement like that would be easy to understand for both the Tribe moniker and the mascot. That article shows variety in referring to William & Mary Athletics and its fans using various forms of the Tribe moniker but never "William & Mary Tribe."   • Thanks for pointing out those guidelines. Going through WP:CRITERIA, I think "William & Mary Athletics" beats "William & Mary Tribe" and "Tribe."
    • Recognizability -- William & Mary Athletics is understandable even to people who have not heard of the program before. "Tribe" and "William & Mary Tribe" require explanation.
    • Naturalness -- Both William & Mary Athletics and its moniker are valid choices by this criterion.
    • Precision -- William & Mary Athletics is more precise than both "William & Mary Tribe" and "Tribe," since "Tribe" often refers to the W&M community as a whole; "the Tribe" is ambiguous while "William & Mary Athletics" is not. For example, this Spring Orientation source [8] refers to all new students as joining the Tribe, without any reference to athletics. Obviously, on their own, "Tribe" and "the Tribe" aren't very precise and the qualifier "William & Mary" is needed to disambiguate either of those choices.
    • Concision -- The use of "William & Mary Tribe Athletics" by some sources indicates that "William & Mary Tribe" isn't disambiguated from the William & Mary community in general; rather than being no longer than necessary, "William & Mary Tribe" isn't long enough.

  • This article refers to a department that includes several teams and clubs. What I found earlier when I checked the source https://tribeathletics.com is that its front page currently uses "Athletics," "W&M," "Tribe," "Tribe Athletics," "William & Mary Tribe Athletics," and "W&M Athletics," but not "William & Mary Tribe," this article's title. This is not inconsistent with other universities. "Alabama Crimson Tide" does not appear in that exact phrasing on their website, but it's the clear, common name. —C.Fred (talk) 03:06, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The distinction reflects the editorial differences between the two universities. The University of Alabama encourages the use of "Crimson Tide" to refer to its sports teams, and this is not ambiguous since it discourages using "Crimson Tide" in non-sports contexts [9]. William & Mary by contrast encourages the use of "William & Mary Athletics" to refer to the sports teams collectively[10], and "Tribe" is ambiguous since its use is popular outside the context of sports.2600:8805:3800:1880:0:0:0:BA0A (talk) 03:23, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. No problem with the current name. Their style guide is a primary source and does not overrule our own article naming policy.
