Diphthongs[edit]

... German ... "neun und neunzig" ([ˈnɔʏnʊntˈnɔʏntsɪç]) ... contains diphthongs, calculated to cause maximum vibration of the chest. The translation, "ninety-nine", has fewer vowels and is less effective in evoking the phenomenon. Better phrases in English include "toy boat”, "Scooby Doo", and "blue balloons".

German [ɔʏ] is the only diphthong in "neun und neunzig", occurring twice. "toy boat" ([ˈtɔɪ̯ˈbɔʊ̯t]) has two diphthongs, but "Scooby Doo" ([ˈskubiˈdu]) and "blue balloons" ([ˈblubəˈlunz]) have none. --Thnidu (talk) 00:12, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ressource[edit]

Hi,

Could "Why you say "ninety-nine" to the Doctor". The Courier-Mail. Brisbane. 1950-09-02. be useful? (I'm not a native English speaker and I'm not confident enough to use it.)
