I've tagged this article because it is in dire need of a major expansion and improvement, which I am unfortunately not in a position to do as it is a subject about which I know very little. But we have a situation where the article on Welsh literature - which is here defined as literature written in Welsh - is acceptable but confusing, not mentioning Welsh writers in English (such as Dylan Thomas) who most readers would expect to see in that article; a completely empty section for literature in the Wales article; and no mention of literature either at Culture of Wales. Pretty shameful really, in my opinion. Ghmyrtle (talk) 23:48, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

I've never visited this page as I didn't realise what it was supposed to contain! A more appropriate name would be Welsh literature in the English language (or Literature of Wales in English), and in that context I agree it is very poor at the moment. The Welsh literature article should then be Welsh literature written in the Welsh language (or Literature of Wales in Welsh). welsh (talk) 08:39, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Images

Re deleted images. My editing skills are limited and I presumed that I could copy images from other Wikipedia pages. It has worked before. If it was just a lack of the correct acknowledgements could someone who has the skill re-instate them? Rwood128 (talk) 21:00, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Re today's deleted images: they were pretty feeble, I agree, but I there was such little choice. It would make these pages more attractive with a couple of good pictures -- any ideas? Rwood128 (talk) 22:01, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

They should at least be relevant. Why would a picture of the Senedd be placed on a Welsh literature in English article? We can only add what is allowed and what is connected to the subject. FruitMonkey (talk) 22:21, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Agreed that the choices were poor, though that image was related to comments on the Welsh Assembly in the article. I was, however, hoping you might have ideas for better images. Rwood128 (talk) 22:34, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Rather than mentioning things in passing, images should aid the reader in understanding what the article is about. Thus on an article of a person, it may be an image of the person themselves. So an image of one of the most important English-language writers (pre-1923 or free) would be great here. A picture of the cover of one of the great E.L. novels to come from Wales would also be appreciated. That's the idea. The fact that these pictures are difficult to come by is why we are lacking images on this article. FruitMonkey (talk) 00:00, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Foolishly I've continued searching! There's a image for George Herbert and also Raymond Williams available, but I cannot work out here to copy the Williams' image (it is not restricted). There are also some images of poems that might be used: Vernon Watkins and Idris Davies (this includes a book cover). There is also the photo of Edward Thomas that was deleted earlier as not relevant. Also I don't see why a good image relating to politics or an industrial site in South Wales is not potentially relevant. Rwood128 (talk) 15:17, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

The George Herbert and also Raymond Williams seem good options to include. Though I am dubious about the dust jacket from Idris Davies, as it would be copyright unless it was older than 60 years plus past the death of the creator. I think the uploader way be mistaken and it could be challenged. If you wish to include an image of a political or industrial site in Wales, you must make sure it increases the understanding of the reader, and is not just there to fill blank space. But if it is, say an image of the industrial Rhondda from the period in which Gwyn Thomas (novelist) wrote about, we could include that as long as the caption stated something like: 'The work of writer Gwyn Thomas was heavily influenced by the industrialisation of his home town in the Rhondda (pictured).' Duplicated article

This article needs to be removed, or reduced to a heading, because it just duplicates material in the main article, Welsh literature in English. Can a senior editor do this, as I don't feel that I have the right, even though I 'plagiarized' what were mainly my own words! Rwood128 (talk) 13:37, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Weak on recent material

Would have like to have seen something about Niall Griffiths and more recent writers. He's been described as the Welsh Irvine Welsh, and his abrasive style might not go down well with academics... but nonetheless, a significant force.--MacRùsgail (talk) 14:44, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

I notice that the Niall Griffiths article is a bare stub, otherwise I'd have pilfered it. Your comment sounds reasonable, and as you know his work, it would be good if you added something -- even the odd sentence helps (the above, with citation, could be a beginning). Yes, I looked at the NG article yesterday, added WP Wales. I don't know what I can add to this article about him, but I'm thinking about creating articles on Stubs and Grits. It lists him as an English writer. I don't know if he self-identifies as English, but certainly he is Welsh based, and his books are based around Wales. [Edit to add: User:FruitMonkey has improved the NG article greatly]

There are several other recent writers who are probably worth mentioning, as well as genre writers.

Another factor is that other than Cardiff and Swansea, most of the major urban centres for Welsh people have tended to be in England, and many Welsh people have moved there for economic reasons.--MacRùsgail (talk) 16:18, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
