Volta (Cirque du Soleil) article initial deletion[edit]

Hi Justlettersnadnumbers, I created the page for this Cirque du Soleil show, and it was rejected and deleted due to "copyright violations"... Could you further explain exactly what was the violation? I'm new and I don't know exactly what I did wrong. I used confirmed sources for all the material, and spent hours creating a page that was all of a sudden wiped; the show has now premiered and we have no page for it. Thanks. Estebanpirazo (talk) 18:05, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Estebanpirazo! I'm afraid I missed this message earlier, as it was at the top of this page instead of at the bottom. Volta (Cirque du Soleil) was redirected and its history hidden because it contained material copied from elsewhere on the internet – we don't allow text copied from non-free sources here. There's a message about this on your talk-page, with the header Copyright problem: Volta (Cirque du Soleil). There's no objection to you restarting the page provided you are sure there's enough in-depth coverage of it in independent reliable sources – just go to the page, hit edit, remove all the text that's there and start writing. If you have questions, the Teahouse is a good place to ask them, or you can ask here. Good luck! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:13, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Justlettersandnumbers, I contacted Cirque du Soleil directly regarding your comment about the material found on their webpage being copyrighted, and their answer is that the material on those pages is part of their press releases, and free to use if needed. I actually explained them what I used their information for, and they answered they have no problem with me using it in the creation of the Wikipedia page for the Cirque du Soleil show Volta. Please let me know how to proceed in this case, to reinstate the Wikipedia page I have created, and let me know if you need me to forward you the e-mail I received directly from them stating this material is free to use. The page I created also has several other references to independent material that are free to use for the creation of the Wikipedia page of this show. Thanks. Volta (Cirque du Soleil) new article[edit]

Thanks for starting a new Wikipedia page for Volta; I spent hours creating a page last year, and some mod just deleted everything all of a sudden because of "copyright issues". FYI, I have directly contacted Cirque du Soleil, and they have answered that any information contained in their Press Releases can be freely used for the creation of this Wikipedia page. I will try to help to improve this page now whenever I have some time available, but please think twice before completely deleting a page without making sure that a copyright violation is being committed. I'm a new user, and I've been completely discouraged to help improve Wikipedia because of this experience Estebanpirazo (talk) 16:37, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Volta (Cirque du Soleil show) article proposed deletion and article merge[edit]

Dear justlettersandnumbers, I just noticed that last week you just almost complete deleted once again the page for the new Cirque du Soleil's show Volta, and you are proposing to delete the article and merge it with the Cirque du Soleil Wikipedia page. Could I ask what is the reason to propose this? Are all the shows presented by Cirque du Soleil then be merged also, and all individual pages be deleted according to your proposal? Please, if you can, further explain what is the problem with the article, because I'm a new user and now am extremely frustrated with all the changes done to the article I helped to create. I'm sorry but I don't understand what is the problem with featuring the new Grand Chapiteau show on a separate article, like every single show has. At first, the article was deleted because of "copywright issues", but I managed to get a permission from Cirque du Soleil themselves to use their own press releases as information on this page; now the issue seems to be that the information cannot be verified, but that is not true, in my opinion. Please, if you have a minute, explain clearly what the problem with the article is. Thanks. Estebanpirazo (talk) 15:13, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Volta (Cirque du Soleil show) Wikipedia page references and information deletion[edit]

Moved from my talk-page
 – Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:51, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Justlettersandnumbers; I want to understand why was most of the information contained on the Wikipedia page of Cirque du Soleil's lastest show, Volta, was deleted, and several references were wiped off completely. This is a new show presented on the Grand Chapiteau, like one of the other 13 others before it, and although some information might be scarce at first, due to being a new show, we should not rush to delete a whole article and propose to merge it, without a really good and valid reason for it. For example, the tour schedule and the whole creative team lists that took a while to create were completely erased because of unreliable sources, but the information was actually obtained directly from the Cirque du Soleil website, and can be easily checked by accessing official pages and press releases from the show. There were also several references from show business pages and newspapers, but those were also deleted. Please clarify what is accepted as a reliable source, as I have checked other Wikipedia pages dedicated to other shows (like Broadway or West End shows), and in several of them the official show webpage is valid as a reference, and also independent blogs, along with newspapers reviews and coverage. I am confused by the way the deletion of references and information has been handled on this article from the beginning, and I would like to ask you, whenever you have the time, to clear things up for all of us, as we cannot continue working on a Wikipedia page that all of a sudden is erased after so many of us have spent hours creating it. Thanks. Estebanpirazo (talk) 19:05, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Estebanpirazo! You seem not quite to understand what Wikipedia is: it is an encyclopaedia, intended to contain information that is verifiable by reference to independent reliable sources. If there is not much information about this circus show, that could be because it isn't very important or interesting, and so has not received much coverage in reliable sources (so in Wikipedia terms, it is not notable); or it could be, as you say, because it is new, so it may be WP:TOOSOON for it to have its own page. Anyway, I made eight edits on 12 September, and left an edit summary for each one. Here's what they said:
  1. rm some unreferenced content – Wikipedia is built on independent reliable sources; all of this may be true, but is not verifiable without sources, and is thus valueless here
  2. rm some unreferenced content – Wikipedia is built on independent reliable sources; all of this may be true, but is not verifiable without sources, and is thus valueless here
  3. rm some unreferenced content – Wikipedia is built on independent reliable sources; all of this may be true, but is not verifiable without sources, and is thus valueless here
  4. rm ecenglish.com, a commercial language school is not a WP:RS
  5. rm self-published refs, Wikipedia is built on independent reliable sources and cares little or nothing what people or bodies say about themselves
  6. rm cirquefascination.com, somebody's blog
  7. Added {{merge to}} and {{notability}} tags to article
  8. moved page VOLTA (Cirque du Soleil) to Volta (Cirque du Soleil) without leaving a redirect: capitalisation – no need to SHOUT!
If any of those is not clear, please ask. Oh, and if you see blog sources or self-published references in other articles, you can remove or question those. One other thing: we really hardly care at all what the Cirque du Soleil itself says about the show – their purpose is to make money, and their website is intended to promote what they do in order to achieve that. That is not our purpose here – we are unpaid volunteers, and not interested in promoting other people's products for them. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:51, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Justlettersandnumbers, so please explain how where would people get touring dates and cities from shows if they are not in the official webpage of the show? I understand that an editor job is not easy, but there seems to be a lot of inconsistencies and discrepancies in how some Wikipedia articles are edited compared to others. I am really confused, as some rules are explained here, but they don't seem to apply to other Wikipedia pages; I understand your job, but at the same time is very discouraging and frustrating to work on a page, to get things wiped off overnight. Again, I know there are rules, but after checking other Wikipedia pages, the rules I am being lectured about are not being applied consistently on other pages. Estebanpirazo (talk) 20:01, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Show dates in article has been constantly deleted by an editor... why?[edit]

Could somebody explain, please, why do the show dates have been continuously deleted? It seems that Justlettersandnumbers keeps deleting the information after it is added by somebody else. He argues that the official website of the show is not a reliable source, and the dates should not come directly from the Cirque du Soleil website, but my question then is: where should the information come from?, as far as I can see, they are the most reliable source in this matter, and several other articles related to shows (not only Cirque du Soleil shows, but also concerts in general and some sport events) are using the official website of that particular show/event, to get dates and general information from. Can somebody explain to me why is it wrong to use the official website to get the show dates?. I would like to hear the point of view of other Wikipedia editors, other than the person that has been deleting the information. I kid you not, I am genuinely confused about the rules we should follow, as they are apparently rigorously being enforced specifically on this article, while other articles allow getting the show dates and other general information from the show official website. Estebanpirazo (talk) 17:11, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Estebanpirazo, I've already encouraged you to visit the WP:Teahouse, but I'll do so again. While in general this, the talk-page of the article, is exactly the right place to discuss changes to the article itself, I suspect that it may not be watched by many editors. The Teahouse is watched by a number of experience editors who are used to answering questions such as yours. Please give it a try! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:06, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Justlettersandnumbers, I will follow your suggestion, but could you please answer for the time being, why is the official Cirque du Soleil website a non-reliable source for show dates, and general information? I find it really confusing that other shows/events (including Broadway/West End tour shows, music concert tours, sporting events) that have a Wikipedia article, can actually use the official website to get this information, but it keeps getting deleted on this specific article. As I said, I am honestly confused with all the rules, and how they get applied on certain articles, but not on other ones.Estebanpirazo (talk) 18:33, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I thought you wanted someone other than me to comment on this, Estebanpirazo? My answer, in brief:
  • Wikipedia is built on independent reliable sources, and cares little or nothing for what people or organisations say about themselves
  • a list of show dates is of no lasting or encyclopaedic interest – in a few years from now they will have been completely forgotten. That sort of material is usually published and kept up to date by the organisation itself (as, apparently, in this case). As for what happens in other articles ... well, there are more than five million of them; you might like to read Wikipedia:Other stuff exists. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:31, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, Justlettersandnumbers, I wanted somebody else to comment because after reading to your answers I am still confused on how rules are being applied to some articles, and not to others. This article, specifically, has been rigorously edited from the beginning (being deleted a couple of times, then being proposed to be merged, and finally, having being changed and information being deleted according to some rules that don't apply to several other articles similar to this one). Thanks again for taking the time to answer, but unfortunately this clarifies nothing, and still makes me wonder what the real problem is in here.Estebanpirazo (talk) 16:29, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Show dates deleted again[edit]

Justlettersandnumbers, you have been deleting uncontroversial factual data from some Cirque du Soleil articles; will you continue to do the same thing on all of the other shows? (such as Luzia, Toruk, Kurios, Amaluna, Totem, Ovo, Koozå, Delirium, Corteo, Varekai, Dralion, Quidam... and many others?)

I was told at the Wikipedia Teahouse that noncontroversial factual data was acceptable on a Wikipedia article, and also that this type of information could perfectly come from a non-independent source, such as the show official website. Estebanpirazo (talk) 19:21, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Estebanpirazo, I don't know how to get this message across to you, but I'll say it again: Wikipedia is built on independent reliable sources. Unsourced material is liable – or indeed likely – to be removed at any time. The responsibility for providing the references lies with the person who wants to add the content – please see WP:BURDEN. I don't have any of those other shows on my watchlist, but if you see any unrefenced content in them you should feel free to remove it unless you can – and want to – find sources to support it. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:09, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Justlettersandnumbers, I don't know either how to explain you that I already asked the question regarding uncontroversial factual data on the Wikipedia Teahouse, as advised by you, and I received the following answer (please make sure you read the bold part) :
"Wikipedia has essentially no interest in what the subject of an article, or anybody closely associated with the subject, says about the subject. This is not 100% true - sometimes uncontroversial factual data about a subject, such as places and dates, may be added to an article that are taken from non-independent sources such as press releases or their own website; but most of the content in any article should come from published sources completely independent of the subject. If there is not enough about the subject from completely independent sources, then it is impossible to write an acceptable article about it - the jargon is that the subject is not notable."
Sorry, but I'm not going to start deleting uncontroversial factual information from other articles (not only on Cirque du Soleil's shows, but also music concerts, touring Broadway shows, etc.), just because you think it's irrelevant information. Did I misunderstand the answer I got from Wikipedia Teahouse? Estebanpirazo (talk) 12:42, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
