"Although George Edwards had favoured the 800 hp Rolls-Royce Dart[7] other engines were considered" 800 doesn't seem very likely to me. That is far too small an output for an aircraft of this size and era, and they would have just used an old single row radial if they only needed 800hp. They could just make it a single engine plane with a big 1,600hp radial or Merlin. That and all the variants listed on the article for that powerplant are in the 1,600-1,800hp class. This is all sourced - and note that the Dart grew a lot, as did the Viscount (initial proposals were for a 24-seater aircraft- it was the ability of the Dart to deliver ever-increasing power which allowed the Viscount to grow into a much more capable aircraft.Nigel Ish (talk) 10:46, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
