Is there anyone out there knowledgeable enough to bring this article up to date? There some evidence that Vernon was created as a "dynasty" by the Leonis family and continues as Vernon is run by two families: the Malburgs and the Malkenhorsts, and has been for 50 years. Is anyone interested in exploring this part of the history? See [1] Very interesting reading. I plan to continue working on the article also. Thanks. The "city" of Vernon, ably described a few years back by L.A. County native Matt Welch, is California's Liechtenstein, a de facto grand duchy with a token population and multiple generations of single-family control.[2]

lbevans: I have a piece on the history of Vernon versus recent LA Times accounts at: www.shaggyman.com Take note on the "two families" issue: Vernon was founded by John B. Leonis and the Furlong brothers, James and Thomas. Those were the original two families. The Furlongs ended their connection with Vernon with the death of Mayor Robert Furlong (Thomas's son) in 1974. Thereafter Leonis Malburg, grandson of John Leonis, was mayor, and the Malkenhorsts enter the picture. It is fair to say that Malburg and Malkenhorst ran the city until 2009, but both of those families have now been removed, and in fact even city employees formerly loyal to them have been purged. Though many secondary figures carry over from the past the dominant figures in Vernon today go back only perhaps twenty years and have no connection to the founders or even to the Malkenhorsts, so there are no "two families" in charge of Vernon today. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lbevans (talk • contribs) 18:50, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

91 percent Latino, or 52 percent non-hispanic white? Which is it?[edit]

In the demographics section, there are two contradictory and very different figures: in the body text it suggests that according to the Census, the city is 90-something percent white, including 52-percent non-hispanic white. In a table immediately below, it lists the city as among the most heavily latino in the state, at 91 percent.

5 miles south of downtown LA?[edit]

The article starts off by saying that Vernon is 5 miles south of downtown LA, but on a map it looks more like 1-3 miles southeast of downtown. I think that was added on 4 March 2011 by DocOfSoc. --Kevinbsmith (talk) 19:53, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Latino Communities section[edit]

Public transportation[edit]

This interesting location deserves an item directing visitors to it via the LRT Blue Line and noting transfer points via bus connections to, say, City Hall. I'm an American writing from my longtime home in Western Europe, but I was instrumental in helping plan the Blue Line, as a supplier of barrier-free ticket-vending machines supplied by a highly qualified Swiss supplier firm. I'm think the Wikipedia should insert this item in keeping with its standard format.
