Does anybody know what the name Vernet les Bains means?

I know that it is a spa village, hence 'les Bains', but what about Vernet ?

John

Vernet is its original catalan name. You can see that in catalan article: ca:Vernet. "Les-bains" was added later because of the spa village.--SMP 23:27, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. This article is rubbish. /Cpetersen1610 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cpetersen1610 (talkcontribs) 17:53, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am in Vernet-les-Bains as I write. This week (21 June - 23 June 2016) the people celebrate the festival of Sant Joan (the Catalan term for Saint John, according to another Wikipedia article). It would be nice to know what the relevance of Sant Joan is to the local Catalan people. It's clearly a Catalan festival, as Catalan flags and colours are hung all over the place. A big part of the festival is the carrying of a sacred flame down from the nearby mountain Canigo. Again, it would be good to know what both the festival and Canigo signify in the local culture. There also seems to be some connection between the red and yellow stripes in the Catalan flag and claw-marks, possibly made by a devilish creature (the original Canigo?). The fire also seems to be related to some such creature - fire-breathing? Canigo again? Altogether, it seems that there is a pagan connection to the festival. Can anyone provide some details in this article or another more general article on Catalan culture? Harry Audus (talk) 21:14, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
