Merging of Commonwealth Games Village 2010 into Venues of the 2010 Commonwealth Games

As you may have noticed, I have proposed a merger of the Commonwealth Games Village 2010 article (edit made) into Venues of the 2010 Commonwealth Games (edit made). While there has been significant media coverage of the construction delays arising from the Games Village and the subsequent public outcries, the venue itself is not significant. I would be hardpressed in seeing how it can get to GA or FA status. Maybe it is actually possible, but the current writing standards of the article definitely does not fulfil requirements (we would need a good clean-up as well as rewrite to get close to there). There is a practice of creating articles on Venues of the XX (multi-sport event), for example see this, this and this (all are FLs). It would be wiser to incorporate information and coverage of the Games Village in a section of the Venues of the 2010 Commonwealth Games article, as is currently done. I oppose such a merger on purely linguistic grounds. The venues and the village are entirely different things. I agree with you that the quality of the writing of many of the articles about the Games is not great. Too many good faith addition by well intentioned editors for whom English is clearly not their first language. But I think that will be solved over time just by the combined efforts of editors with greater skills. HiLo48 (talk) 04:04, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

My stand on the linguistic aspect of this matter is that the Games Village is considered a venue of the event; not necessarily a sports venue, but a venue in its own right. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as "the place where something happens, especially an organized event such as a concert, conference, or sports competition." Wiktionary states the definiton of venue as "1. A place, especially the one where a given event is to happen". The Games Village, as we know it, serves as accomodation and provides complementary services such as entertainment to the Games participants. Besides, we can look at Venues of the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics (an FL which I was involved) as a precedent. ANGCHENRUI ^Talk♨ 07:26, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Sadly you're not getting much response here. I will just re-assert my point, which is that a venue is a place where a sporting event takes place. Where people stay is not a venue. In the Olympics the precious American basketballers tend to stay at a local five star hotel rather than the (to them) downmarket village. That doesn't make that hotel a venue. Isn't that the definition of sports venue? It's a sub-branch definition in most dictionaries, including Wiktionary. If the 'sports' is taken out, than it is okay. Besides, the article Venues of the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics that was recently promoted to FL-status has 'Youth Olympic Village' (same idea as Commonwealth Games Village) included as a section in the article. Facilities at three sports complexes in Delhi need to be listed separately instead of jointly

The facilities at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex and the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex need to be listed separately in this article and not jointly, contrary to what is in accordance with the official 2010 Commonwealth Games website.

The facilities in the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex are:

• Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium
• Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium
• Jawaharlal Nehru Lawn Bowling Facility

The facilities at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex are:

• Indira Gandhi Arena
• Yamuna Velodrome
• K.D. Jadhav II Indoor Hall

The facilities at the Yamuna Sports Complex are:

• Yamuna Gymnasium
• Yamuna Archery Range

Yesterday, I made an edit to this page which involved getting the names of the facilities separated from each other, but the user AngChenrui reverted that change. If I have to keep editing this page just to keep those facilities and their facts separate in this list, ait is possible that a potential edit war may be incited in this article and this article may never reach featured list status because of that edit war. No you don't have to keep editing the page to maintain your standard, since it would mean an edit war by then lol. Anyway, this is a list of venues, not a list of facilities. If you can convince me listing facilities makes more sense than listing venues (you can refer to the Oxford definition or any credible definition) beforehand, please do so. Otherwise, I think we should stick with the status quo. Btw, you can raise this on the current FLC as well. ANGCHENRUI _WP:MSE♨ 08:59, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Facilities/venues don't have to be entire complexes, unless there's only one venue used for the CWGs in the complex. Look at the list of Venues of the 2008 Summer Olympics and see what I mean, the venues are listed separately in new, existing, and temporary sections, that is not the case with this list. Therefore I think the list should look like this:

• Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Shooting Range, Khardarpur
• Delhi University Rugby Stadium
• Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range
• Dr. S.P. Mukherjee Swimming Stadium
• Indira Gandhi Sports Complex

Okay I think that's fair. Will you modify the table as such? Once you are done, I'll double-check the facts (in case there are really facilities which hold more than one sport themselves).
