I propose incoporate discussion of Caste in that article and leave a very minimal entry here. Most of what's here now belongs in Caste, it seems to me. I'll wait a few days to see if anyone objects. -- Bill 18:48, 11 Aug 2003 (UTC)

TOP OBC BANIA LEADER IN INDIA:

Modi is from the Ghachi community, also an OBC, . NARENDRA MODI'S victory with a two-thirds majority in Gujarat has signalled the emergence of a strong, independent OBC (Other backward Class) leader in the BJP. Earlier, two independent OBC leaders — Laloo Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav — had emerged from the fold of socialist politics in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. But that was in the context of the Yadavs emerging as landed gentry with some socio-economic capital.Mr. Modi,Vasihays member of a Backward Caste that has little socio-economic clout in Gujarat, used the Parivar policy of attacking the deliberately constructed enemy — Muslims — with a more organised network than that of the Parivar's Brahmin leaders. Mr Sriprakash Jaiswal minister of state for coal informed the Lok Sabha as per Geological Survey of India In its 4th report the following castes have been recommended by this commission for inclusion in the list of OBC's of the GNCT of Delhi.

Etymology

This section badly needs cleanup. I started by removing the unencyclopedic and irrelevant final paragraphs and renaming the section. But more still neds to be done. --Shruti14 talksign 02:24, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Section removed. 'Vishal' does not mean 'to live'. Latin 'villa', english 'wich' is imagination. vish-vishva-universe is not connected to word 'vaishya'. Not a single reference. Removed section. RAMA (talk) 14:07, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

It indeed still needs more work (horrible English) Venustas 12 (talk) 03:16, 5 February 2010 (UTC).

{{edit semi-protected}} Vaishya, also known as Vaisya' or Vysyas, is 3rd position in one of the four varnas (social divisions) of Hinduism. According to Vedic tradition, this order primarily comprises merchants, cattle-herders and farmer artisans[1][2]. In Hindu beliefs, the duties of a Vaisya, as described by Hindu God Krishna, are krsi (growing food grains), goraksha (cow protection), vanijyam (trade), vaisya karma (work) and svabhavajam (born of his own nature). The Vaisyas eventually became land-owners, money-lenders and influential traders and are often credited for the evolution of capitalist ideologies in India.[3]Bania are small shopkeeper ,they claimed vaisyas status ,now Many vaisyas adopted new Bania word ,bania is a landless people ,they work in small shops,as labours ,salesman ,run small shops, they are clerk ,peon,Bania and vaisyas come in OBC/SC in for list for their social protection, and bania (secdule caste ) in north east and south india ,and OBC bania are in( uttarpardesh, bihar, gujrat, rajasthan mp,south india etc) brittal bania, bania,OBC Banias are Sudi, Halwai, Roniyar, Pansari, Modi,Gupta, patnaik Kasera,GUPTA, Kesarwani, Thathera, Patwa, Sinduriya-Bania,Mahuri-Vaishya, Avadh-Bania, Agrahari-Vaishya,Patwa, Patua, Garg.Mangal Kucchal Goyan Goyal Bansal .Kansal Singhal Mittal Tayal Bhandal ,jaisawal, sahu, teli singhle like sahu, are ST in some state, jaiswal punjabi bania are SC ,and mode gujrati bania are OBC/SC,LINGNAYAT BANIA are SC in south and obc# Gandhi is lower caste bania in gujrat. The Vaisyas, along with the Kshatriyas and Brahmins, are of the 'twice born' (dvija) castes of the classical theory.[4] Historically, Vaisyas have played a much larger role in Indian affairs apart from trade and commerce. Indian traders were widely credited for the spread of Indian culture to regions as far as southeast Asia.[5].

The Vaisya community consist of several Jātis, notably — the Agarwals, the Vijayvargiyas, the Khandelwals, the Vaishya, the Rastogis the Oswals and the many people of the north; the Arya Vysyas of the south and Vaishya Vani of Konkan and some parts in Maharashtra ans Karnataka; and the Ambanis(sindhi), Sarabhais, Parekhs and Patidars (Patels)(obc).Modi (obc)gujraat of the west. Some jātis are of mixed heritage. For example, according to legend, the Agarawals trace their origin to the Sudra Sun Dynasty who later adopted Vaisya tradition as well as the Patidars of the west who were once Kurmi Sudra.[6][7]
