Unaccredited institutions of higher learningUnaccredited institutions of higher education — The bolded title in the article lead is already "Unaccredited institutions of higher education" and "higher education" seems to be the more accepted term. Orlady (talk) 01:46, 6 October 2010 (UTC) (proposal actually was initiated by Novaseminary)[reply]

The bolded title in the lead is "Unaccredited institutions of higher education". But the actual article title is Unaccredited institutions of higher learning. I propose moving this article to Unaccredited institutions of higher education. I propose this becuase the more-accepted term seems to be "higher education". And our wikipedia page on higher learning is a disamb page noting it is a synonym of higher education, while higher education gets one to the correct subject in one shot. Novaseminary (talk) 00:48, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. Seeing that you seem to be engaged on a large-scale campaign to rename a lot of related articles that have carried their names for a long time (this particular one is fairly new, but it was created as a split from List of unaccredited institutions of higher learning, which had a long history), these "new title" discussions need to be handled as requested moves. I've taken the liberty of renaming this talk page section and inserting the appropriate template to get this one started. Since all related articles ought to be discussed at the same time, I'm guessing that you would also propose moving List of unaccredited institutions of higher learning to List of unaccredited institutions of higher education. (If one is moved, the other one also should move.) I haven't looked around to see if there are other related articles that should be discussed at the same time. --Orlady (talk) 01:46, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Per WP:RM "Discussions about retitling of an article (page move) can always be carried out at the article's talk page without adding an entry" at WP:RM. Since you converted this to a formal requested move, does that mean you oppose the idea? My only campaign is to rationalize these articles so as to avoid the POV and sloppiness that you and I both disdain. Tighter, well-sourced articles using consistent terminology help keep the POV out (or at least make it more obvious and easier to excise). This proposed title change was merely to bring uniformity to what we call post-secondary education in titles. The main article is Higher education, so I would use that as a starting point. And yes, I do think it makes sense to move the list if this article is moved. Novaseminary (talk) 02:22, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I would also note that it was Orlady who, in 2007, wrote the lead to be "Unaccredited institutions of higher education" changing the lead from what it was in the article's first couple of weeks, the oh-so-elequent "Unaccredited initutions" with this good edit. Novaseminary (talk) 02:39, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not necessarily opposed to the move, but I have not commented yet because I'm not convinced that your proposed new title is the ideal choice. I think this deserves to be handled through the requested moves process because (1) multiple article titles appear to be potentially affected, (2) considering that this particular title existed for a very long time, there might be a good reason for it, (3) requested moves gets more eyes onto a discussion, and (4) requested moves is often effective in averting the kind of p*ssfight that broke out over the recent page moves affecting the related articles Educational accreditation, Higher education accreditation, and Regional accreditation. --Orlady (talk) 04:09, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support renaming to Unaccredited institutions of higher education. I considered proposing the alternative name Unaccredited higher education institutions, but finally decided that was too much of a noun cluster.
Aside: Peering back into the sands of time looking for clues on the source of the current name, my best guess is that it comes from the use of "higher learning" in John Bear's writings. I imagine that he was trying to look at education from the student's perspective, and reasoning that the student is interested more in "learning" than in "education." --Orlady (talk) 22:02, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In Germany, the right to grant someone a Ph.D. is regulated by the federal states (In fact, most if not all EU countries regulate it). "Private" Ph.D. are unknown. I understand that things are different in the academic world in English-speaking countries but I simply don't understand how an unaccredited institution like the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality was able to grant someone a Ph.D. - For my understanding, this is not a Ph.D. but similar to a Ph.D. granted by the Universal Life Church ... The core question is: Is someone who got such a Ph.D. a doctor? Best regards, Zeitungsente0815 (talk) 15:06, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Removed section on Finland[edit]

I removed a section on Finland making the claims that 1) there are no private universities/institutes of higher education in Finland (see Helsinki School of Business) and 2) universities/institutes of higher education are not allowed to collect tuition (It has since become standard to collect tuition from non-EU/EEA students and at least HELBUS has tuition even for Finns). The only remaining correct information (date of nationalization of Åbo Akademi) did not seem relevant for the article, leaving the section void of any meaningful and relevant content. -Ljleppan (talk) 12:47, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for merge[edit]

Northern Moonlight, thanks for the merge and redirect of Degrees offered by unaccredited institutions of higher education, which was created during an AfD discussion that closed as "no consensus". I agree with the merge as it reflects appropriate consolidation of this material. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 17:59, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
