Number of Battle Stars[edit]

My husband was on the USS Concord for most of WWII. He said they had received seven (7) battle stars on just one. USS Concord during World War II[edit]

I was reading the article concerning the USS Concord and its history from the start of World War II. This was my Father's ship; his name was William B. Evans and he was Chief Petty Officer aboard the Concord from 1939 thru I believe August of 1945. The article says that at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the entrance of the United States into the war, the Concord was stationed in San Diego. This is incorrect. As of Dec. 6, 1941, the Concord had received its orders to head back to San Diego for an overhaul. The night of Dec. 6, the ship pulled out of Pear Harbor and anchored just off Diamond Head readied to head back to the states the next morning. The ship and crew were awakened the next morning as many were with the Japanese planes coming across and into the harbor the morning of Dec. 7th...They were not attacked by the Japanese but following the attack the ship was ordered back into the harbor to 'pick up' a civilian ship and to escort them back to the states... this they did, circling the civilian ship all the way to the west coast with only one large gun aboard the ship, as the Concord was only at the time a "light cruiser" and had been being used before the war as a cargo ship for the Navy. Once back to the U.S. Mainland, the ship was taken in for over haul and also refitted as a fighting ship and was then sent to guard the Panama Canal. The rest of the article as I see it is fairly correct, i.e. the part about Admiral Bird, and it spent a lot of time in the Allution Islands during the war. I would much appreciate if someone who knows how to edit to please add this to the article...If you need more specifics I have them - Penny L. Turret that "fired the last shot of the war"[edit]

This allusion at the end is entirely unexplained. Can someone add more detail or weaken the claim? Where is this turret today? When did it reportedly last fire? DulcetTone (talk) 21:49, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
