Blue Peter[edit]

This article could do with mention of the TV programme Blue Peter, who have been involved with the tree several times sice the 1960s. One year, John Noakes and Peter Purves went to Norway to assist with the felling of the tree; another time, Andy Akinwolere dropped the star which he was supposed to be putting on top. Several presenters, including Valerie Singleton, have switched on the lights. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:19, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

'Gifted by Norway'[edit]

1st sentence: 'The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is a Christmas tree gifted to the people of Britain by Norway each year since 1947.' From 'Tree': 'At the base of the tree stands a plaque, bearing the words: This tree is given by the city of Oslo as a token of Norwegian gratitude to the people of London for their assistance during the years 1940-45.' The 1st sentence cites Baker, Margaret 'Discovering Christmas Customs and Folklore: A Guide to Seasonal Rites'. No source is given for the plaque text, but a UK government source has 'City of Oslo’s 70th Christmas tree gift to Trafalgar Square. A Norwegian spruce, the City of Oslo’s traditional gift to the UK, was cut down in during a ceremony in the forest outside Oslo by the Mayor of Oslo and Lord Mayor of Westminster.' https://www.gov.uk/government/news/oslos-2016-christmas-tree-gift-to-trafalgar-square A Norwegian government source has 'Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree: From Oslo to London. Every year since 1947, the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree has been given to the people of London by the city of Oslo, as a token of thanks to the United Kingdom for their help during the Second World War.' https://norwegianarts.org.uk/trafalgar-square-christmas-tree-from-oslo-to-london/ I am editing the first sentence to read: The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is a Christmas tree given to the people of London by the city of Oslo each year since 1947, citing this magazine article https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidnikel/2019/12/04/londons-trafalgar-square-christmas-tree-is-a-thank-you-gift-from-norway/ Robert P Connolly (talk) 18:09, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
