Impact on the autism community in Ireland[edit]

Tony Humphreys' publications have had a huge, and paradoxically positive, impact on the autism community in Ireland. The references to biographical articles in reputable published sources as well as to Dr Humphreys own publications have been deleted from the entry, without detail of rationale. The 'autism controversy' has also been deleted, despite presenting a prominent feature of Dr Humphreys popular and widely-cited books and academic publications. I have restored them, but welcome discussion on the talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.78.5.84 (talk) 11:21, 4 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This apparent vandalism is a recurring issue with this page, from which entire sections have been erased - e.g. by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Rachelrud — Preceding unsigned comment added by Grumpy Marmoset (talkcontribs) 11:36, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ICAAN[edit]

A clause about ICAAN was added by AspieNo1 without any source reference. Please provide a reference or remove the unsourced statement. Grumpy Marmoset (talk) 16:42, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Previously told that links to ICAAN pages or facebook cause group referencing information in relation to Asperger's and autism not allowed, so we didn't include any. We objected to the removal of ICAAN linking discussions and reference material. The co-founders of ICAAN object to cross-referencing of Aspie-related content as censorship. The links to pages, and research by Aspies in relation to the history of Aspies and our lingo should not be discriminated against.

It is not for me to say, but those of us who have confronted him for his offensive, discriminatory, and unfounded defamatory statements to a significant minority group, and growing should be responded to. What scares so many people who do not have an autistic gene, is that we few who have children have large diverse education backgrounds and may constitute the majority of post graduates - and being the thinkers and problem-solvers in society are an ever-larger genetic grouping, which is likely in generations replace Homo Sapiens as the worlds dominant species. Talk curing us as if we are some disease, simply shows fear of us as the next evolutionary step - for we are the geeks, the thinkers, the poets and scientists who are the future - without us the world is doomed to cause extinction and stagnation as mankind dies without finding ways to resolve and overcome the destruction and environmental disaster he is unfolding on future generations. He has put back the study of the autistic spectrum back generations. He does not need to know other disciplines, or even believe in the information gleamed from him, but he does not have the right to singularly insult over 500,000 people in the spectrum in Ireland and their spouses, siblings, parents and children in one foul swoop. Members of ICPD, PwDI board and networks past and present will be gathered to show that people with Disabilities, supported by Spouses and Family (Parents, Siblings and children) with disabilities and advocates and local groups, hostels, centre users or committees and branches of national organisations (run for, by and made up of people with disabilities - where the majority of people with disabilities are in control of the group or branch organisation) will state that we are the experts and we have a duty, nay right to be consulted and involved in all decision-making by the state, national, local, European and international government, public service and NGO's as the organisation of people with Disabilities. We will be joined and speaking for ourselves, coupled with Politicians with disabilities, spouses and family members of people with disabilities. We will be presenting a Declaration, and procedure to prevent able-bodied politic or service provider agenda's from causing bullying, fear, frustration or repression of any person with a disability, and allowing any network, regional group or network person who has a grievance against a network committee of people with disabilities or any individual person's put-downs or intimidation to be reviewed in a civil area of law. The sad fact of PwDI was that government used us as a tool for presenting service provider functions and events, and network members and committee felt upset when told that they were stupid, to shut up and do what they were told to by officials and the same Centre Managers and staff that had kept them down, and what PwDI was supposed to give them a safe forum to represent themselves from. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AspieNo1 (talkcontribs) 01:42, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see no problem with creating an article about ICAAN.ie (http://www.icaan.ie/content/home/default1.asp), but it really helps to have published sources in a newspaper, magazine or book. You need to establish that the organisation exists, that it is notable enough for inclusion in an encyclopedia and that it has some activities. Wikipedia does not generally accept references to web pages, especially Facebook profiles or other social media, as credible sources. There do seem to be plenty of credible published sources to improve this article, not least material published by the subject himself.93.107.215.30 (talk) 13:53, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Refrigerator Mother Theory[edit]

Tony Humphreys' article in the Examiner (Irish newspaper) was so widely quoted and caused such an impact - including formal complaints to Examiner Group of Newspapers and the Press Ombudsman - that it seems an integral part of the subject of this article. His long history of publications about refrigerator mothering, over more than 20 years, is critical. The key references to the autism issue include the article and reactions (Humphreys, Tony (3 February 2012). "Core connection: A diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome does little to help a child troubled by unhappy relationships". Irish Examiner. p. 7.; Brenda Power (12 February 2012). "Peers may take issue with Dr Tony Humphreys’s claim to be "Ireland’s most influential psychologist"". Sunday Times. p. 13.; Ronan McGreevy (14 February 2012). "Comments 'likely to cause upset'". Irish Examiner.; "ICAAN calls for Dr Tony Humphreys' resignation".; "Psychologist Humphreys shocked by Reaction to Autism Comments". Irish Examiner. 11 February 2012. Archived from the original on 18 February 2012.). His earlier output on the consequences of cold mothering include: Kathryn Holmquist (21 May 1996). "The power of negative thinking". Irish Times. p. 11.; Humphreys, Tony (28 October 2011). "Our rigid labels: Neglect does not irretrievably 'hard-wire' infants – Damage can be undone with unconditional love". p. 5.; Humphreys, Tony (7 February 1995). "Learning about your 'worth'".
