Kestrel Books[edit]

WorldCat library catalog records give Harmondsworth: Kestrel for first editions of this book and also Jan Mark's 1983 Carnegie Medal winner Handles (novel). As I depart both articles, their infoboxes provide Publisher Kestrel Books (linked to Viking Press).

I am not entirely comfortable with this. Was Kestrel Books a Viking imprint or subsidiary in 1976/1983? At Viking Press we say merely "Viking Kestrel was one of its imprints" and give two External link inadequate Viking histories at Penguin. Previous editors had provided "Publisher Viking Children's Books" for Handles (1983). I have no other evidence at hand.

publisher/Guardian prize. The Guardian obituary says the novel "was written for (and won) the Kestrel/Guardian prize for a children's novel by a previously unpublished writer." The Independent obituary says it "won the Penguin/ Guardian competition for the best children's novel by an unpublished writer."

I am not certain either that the newspaper in 2006 was correct about its 1976 co-sponsor or that Kestrel and Penguin were independent in 1976. I have stepped toward writing the article that way, quoting The Guardian (Origins) and relegating mention of Penguin to a footnote (Notes).

Web search for "Kestrel/Guardian" hits Anne Fine herself as 1975 runner up for the prize; that for "Guardian/Kestrel" hits Anne Fine at jrank re 1978 nomination for the prize. Those two dates bracket 1976 and thus provide some support.

Kestrel Books published Jan Mark's 1976 book, and that quotation from The Guardian suggests unpublished writers submitted children's fiction to the prize sponsors. In turn this hints to me an arrangement where manuscripts were submitted and the co-sponsoring publisher accepted the winning manuscript. Kestrel would be the prize sponsor and ipso facto the publisher.
