Estonian Connection[edit]

There is (at least) one factual error in the article linked to “Estonian connection.” Jean Umiker was not Thomas Sebeok's wife in 1970; at that time he was legally married to and living with Eleanor Lawton Sebeok. Jean Umiker did not become his wife until 1972. Detail Stickler (talk) 20:20, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Polymath?[edit]

The lede says Sebeok was "a polymathic American semiotician and linguist." The Life and works section says "His transdisciplinary work and professional collaborations spanned the fields of anthropology, biology, folklore studies, linguistics, psychology, and semiotics." I would add Sebeok to the List of polymaths but I don't know of any other sources that support the claim that Sebeok is a polymath. Help anyone? Birth and Age?[edit]

The article currently gives Sebeok's year of birth as 1920, and then tells us "In 1943, at the age of 24 ..." Which is it? Was he born in 1919, or was he only 23 in 1943? Hong12kong (talk) 01:32, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

2020 re-write[edit]

I have edited this article for clarity and style, because the previous version read more like an obituary than an encyclopedia article. I was not able to find a better photo with a creative commons license or that could be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, but there are a lot of great photos elsewhere online. If you are the owner of one of these please consider uploading it. Also, this article would benefit from some discussion of Sebeok's major ideas. The Semiotics article has an entry about him, but it is both short and a bit difficult for people unfamiliar with the field. Vanessa Quinlivan (talk) 21:23, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
