Modern meaning of this phrase.[edit]
I was surprised at the meaning of "twixt the cup and the lip" provided in he article. It is not what I understood at all. I asked a few friends what they thought it meant. In all cases, the "slip" was the disclosure of secrets. In two cases, the "cup" indicated a tea cup at a social gathering. In the other two cases (including myself), the cup contained alcohol.
At least in modern New Hampshire, USA, this no longer alludes to general intentions gone wrong. Scott Bowden (talk) 12:41, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
