Maskerade[edit]

I was re-reading Maskerade recently. In the part where the witches are visiting the publishing house, there is the following passage:

Movable type was known in Ankh-Morpork, but if wizards heard about it they moved it where no one could find it. They generally didn't interfere with the running of the city, but when it came to movable type, the pointy foot was put down hard. They had never explained why, and people didn't press the issue because you didn't press the issue with wizards, not if you liked yourself the shape you were. They simply worked around the problem and engraved everything. This took a long time and meant that Ankh-Morpork was, for example, denied the benefit of newspapers, leaving the population to fool themselves as best they could.

It's been a while since I've read The Truth, and I don't have a copy to hand, but I don't recall this ever being an issue in the plot. Can anyone who has read it recently tell me whether it came up, or if Terry just forgot about it? It seems odd that, in one book he would rule out even the possibility of newspapers, only to then write a book entirely focused on the subject. 91.109.186.246 (talk) 00:28, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is brought up, the Wizards discuss it saying that there's a danger with movable type being used to print magic books (since if the same type is then used to print an ordinary book, magic could be transferred in disastrous ways), but when the Bursar goes to investigate, the much lower prices of the Dwarves printing services compared to those of the engravers turned it into a moot point. Merging Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip into this article[edit]

Agree, it seems both articles are best suited to be merged here since Pin and Tulip only appear in this book, and their articles talk alot about 'The Truth' plot. --takagawa-kun 03:28, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite[edit]

Can someone please rewrite the plot synopsis? It's too New Firm-centric. William's the main character, not Mr. Pin.

               Agreed; I've rewritten the plot summary as best I can. It's not perfect, but at least it covers the majors characters. -ALB

The Truth Shall Make You Fret[edit]

The Ankh-Morpork Times motto, "The Truth Shall Make You Fret", is a reference to a biblical quote from the Gospel of St John:

John 8:32 "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
