A note on terminology
Gilbert, Sullivan, Carte and other Victorian era British composers and librettists, as well as the contemporary British press and literature, called works of the sort that Gilbert and Sullivan produced "comic operas" to distinguish them from the continental European operettas that they wished to displace. Most of the specialist literature on Gilbert and Sullivan since that time has referred to these works as "operas" (e.g., Jacobs, Preface), though some later general books on music prefer "operetta". For a discussion of this, see Kuykendall, James Brooks. "Recitative in the Savoy Operas", The Musical Quarterly, Vol. 95, Issue 4, pp. 549–612. The Gilbert and Sullivan WikiProject has used the term "opera" consistently throughout the G&S-related articles within its scope.

1917 .mp3 recording[edit]

Someone just added this .mp3 file of the 1917 recording of The Mikado. I am sorry to say that I don't think it adds anything to the article and, in fact, shows the opera in a bad light. I set aside the fact that the 1917 recording is old-fashioned by modern standards and would, under the best circumstances, be unlikely to appeal to most Wikipedia readers. More importantly, this recording is of poor quality and is under-speed, lowering the pitch and causing a flat, unpleasant sound by artists whose other recordings are far more pleasing to the ear. Far better representations of the opera are readily available online. I propose that we remove this recording. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:07, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I heartily concur. If it were an accurate transfer I would gladly overlook the narrow dynamic range of the acoustic recording for the sake of its historical importance, but this one is a seriously inaccurate transfer of the original. One has only to listen to the excellent transfer on YouTube to hear the correct pitch and such a familiar voice as George Baker sounding like his usual self rather than so distorted, flat in pitch and slow in tempo as on this transfer. As well as deleting it from the Mikado article here, I'd prefer to see the mp3 file deleted from Wikimedia in general. Tim riley talk 19:18, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2022 Montana Production[edit]

Definitely not. There are dozens of productions of this opera every year, including quite a few professional productions. Many of these address the criticism discussed in the section of the article about the "Japanese" setting of the opera.
