Will's illness[edit]

In my copy [1st ed. Atheneum, NY], Will is recovering from hepatitis, not tuberculosis - do other editions say TB? If so, a note about variant texts is needed ... Abbeybufo (talk • contribs) 18:34, 16 October 2007 (UgTC)

Publication history[edit]

The Newbery Medal "for excellence in U.S. children's literature" is a red flag, but the award does not require that the US edition be first or that the author be American, only that the book be published in English in the US.

According to current rules[1], "The Award is restricted to authors who are citizens or residents of the United States."

The Dark is Rising series listing at the Internet Speculative Fiction Database gives October 1975 for the first UK edition and 1975 (no month) for the first US edition. Worldcat gives July 1975 for the US edition and calls it the first edition. If that is reliable, the four-month difference seems to me long enough to call it a "United States" book and to give US first edition data in the {{infobox book}}. --P64 (talk) 21:33, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nevertheless I have not revised the infobox to give first US edition data; rather, to give first UK data consistently, with a reference. (This revision includes adding a cover artist and a changing the publisher.)

The first book was published 1965 in the UK, 1966 in the US. The 1973 to 1977 sequels were published "almost simultaneously" but earlier in the US, according to the publication dates I have gathered. See Talk:The Dark Is Rising Sequence#Publication Dates for more information.

(I don't know what listed publication dates actually mean, nor how reliable are our sources. I know that Wikipedia deprecates release_date in favor of pub_date but I don't know the point of the distinction.) --P64 (talk) 00:13, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Horror[edit]

Likely to be lost in a big biog- bibiog- and awards revision, I added horror fiction to the infobox Genres. It was a moment of weakness inspired by the title of one new reference, where it is not specific to this book which I haven't read. --P64 (talk) 19:36, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
