I agree that including objectively reported information on the critical reaction to the film is important. I don't however, think any critic's or opinion should be included in an encyclopedia article in the absence of proper citation. Since this section contains so much information that involves the opinion of primarily one film critic, and since no published sources are properly cited for this information, I have moved it here until proper, verifiable citations can be included in the article. Fair enough! Thanks for moving this section here. In the mean time I'm asking for help with finding the citation at the Pauline Kael article —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fairlane75 (talkcontribs) 20:08, August 21, 2007 (UTC).

Critical reaction to the play and the film[edit]

The play and the film have been critised by some for portraying Johnson as many white, liberal Americans wanted to remember him, rather than as the defiant and controversial black man he really was.[citation needed] In her dismissive review of the film, collected in Deeper Into Movies, New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael asked rhetorically why Sacker and Ritt had not shown Johnson as he was perceived during the height of his success, as a proud black man who appeared in one of his publicity photos with his arms around two blonde women.[citation needed] Instead, in the film Johnson is portrayed as an clean-cut, middle-class role-model, as if he had been a CORE member avant la lettre. [citation needed] Kael was upset that almost 60 years after Johnson was hounded by the police for consorting with white women, the play and the film were still trying to mollify white America's senisbilities.[citation needed]

Popular culture/references[edit]

I'd like to suggest adding a section on references to The Great White Hope in popular culture. For example,The National (band) makes a reference in their song Mr November. There must be other references. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.30.94.254 (talk) 01:45, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe we should have some references which show the phrase in non-racial contexts and perhaps describing black people? Slightnostalgia (talk) 15:09, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
