Omissions[edit]

Strangely the encyclopedia does not have a category for books, which in the print editions at least can make it hard to track things down unless they've been adapted for other media - for example 'The Lord of the Rings' is a film and radio show, but 'The Silmarillion' does not exist and cannot be found until you know the Author's name. I have found a book titled Encyclopedia of Science Fiction -not- THE Encyclopedia of Science Fiction with the following info:

Should we mention it on this page, or maybe create a WP:DISAMBiguation page so that "Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" does not redirect to "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction"? It may even be a very early edition of the same book?

Current status?[edit]

I'm a little unclear from the article (and from information on associated web sites) where work on the Third Edition of the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction stands — does anyone know? I see in number of places, including John Clute's own homepage, statements suggesting that the third edition was due to be released online in 2007, but I haven't been able to find if/when that actually happened. Yes it's a valuable source for at least hundreds of articles here. There should be at least one dedicated WP:CITation template that generates consistent formal references.

Yes some edition is online from 2011-10-02; that day's official notice (cited in the article) labels it "Beta Text".

Current status. "Introduction to Third Edition" (cited in the article) now carries dateline 2013-04-13 and tag "Prelim". It is signed by the editors "October 2011-January 2013". The latter may mean that the work, said October 2011 to be completed at the end of 2012, actually was declared complete January 2013. But "Prelim" suggests to me that all remains a beta edition.

Editions[edit]

Officially this edition is the third. WorldCat and ISFDB clearly show that the 1993 second edition was revised and slightly enlarged, probably twice for both 1995 (US only?) and 1999 print editions. There were revisions of entirely different nature for the 1995 Multimedia edition, no doubt also some corrections. The revisions from 1993 to 1995 (print and multi) may have been minor. The online edition seems to be called "third" because it is based on the latter digital version of the second edition—rather than based on the 1999 edition that was updated through 1998/1999.

Quote "Introduction to the Third Edition" (2013-04-13): "... the 1993 Second Edition, edited by John Clute and Peter Nicholls, which itself took on various forms over the years. Two of its reprintings (in 1995 and augmented in 1999) featured an appendix listing corrections and addenda; and a separate CD-ROM version, which added over 65,000 words to the original text (see Introduction to the CD-ROM Edition), also appeared in 1995.

The Third Edition takes as its starting point the text of the 1995 CD-ROM edition."

No doubt publishers called 1995 and 1999 editions new/revised in some sense and that shows up in some WorldCat library records (External link). No doubt some users last decade considered the 1999 edition to be the third edition. Thus the online edition may be a third edition but not the only one.

On the other hand ISFDB (two formal references in the article) treats 1979 and 1993/95/99 as distinct titles. The former does carry the A to Z subtitle and Peter Nicholls is the only listed editor.
