Reasons why the war started?[edit]

Disease and fleas in the tents? Hurricane destroying supplies? Lack of medical supplies? None of those have ever previously been given as reasons for a war starting, to the best of my knowledge. Reasons for losing a war, or doing badly in one, yes. I can understand protecting the Turks from the Russians, but where does the Holy See come into it? There has never been a land border between the temporal dominions of the Papacy and the Russian State, and I can't see the Russians being suspected of planning a naval attack on the Papal States - even in the darkest days of Stalin! I have read the book and own a copy. The official cause for the Crimean war was a scuffle between (or among, my English is rather broken) Orthodox and Roman Catholic monks for the control of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Jerusalem, at that time under Ottoman rule). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.85.148.202 (talk) 10:30, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
