I would have thought Ann Margaret was spoofing Velma from "Farewell My Lovely". Velma was married to Judge Grayle, who was very old and unable to satisfy the needs of his much younger wife. They lives in a mansion and Velma, after her husband leaves her alone with Marlowe, hits on him very hard. The scene in the restaurant with Peckinpaugh and Pepe Damascus was based on the Sam Spade and Joe Cairo relationship, but apart from Joe hiring Sam, the scene was embellished so far from the original as to be not a spoof of anything.
