TPTB

I've hear TPTB mentioned at a lot of TAR places. I know it has something to do with the producers, but what does it mean exactly? TeckWizTalkContribs# of Edits 17:59, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

TPTB is often used for "The Powers That Be". Whether not that is the case here, I don't know. Hope that helps.Amazingracer 04:28, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

I deleted a phrase that said: "This (sic) will be the first time Amazing race has an openly gay couple." If I remember correctly, weren't the winners of season 2 (Chip and Gretchen) openly gay? Stevo D 23:39, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Previous gay couples - Team Guido(TAR1), Reichen and CHIP(season 4), Lynn and Alex(season 7)
I thought Oswald & Danny from Season 2 was also gay. Correct me I'm wrong mouselmm 03:57, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Oswald and Danny were gay, but they weren't a couple.

Muslim-American

Mkay well I understand the political-correctness of saying "Asian-American" and "Indian-American", but is it proper to say "Muslim-American"? "Muslim" is a member of the Islamic faith, not a race, and that would be somewhat on par with saying "Jewish-American" or "Catholic-American". I do believe that it is notable that this is the first Muslim team, but I was just wondering what was you guys's thoughts on this (or if there was an actual Muslim who could respond to this with their thoughts). --HansTAR

I agree. If someone is Indian-American, then that means that they or their ancestors came from India but moved to the United States. Therefore, if you say that someone is "Muslim-American," this implies that they were from Islam but moved to the United States. This doesn't make sense! Islam is a religion, not a country, and one can be Islamic and American at the same time. Also, if they're on The Amazing Race, one can assume that they're probably Americans. Have any TAR contestants not been U.S. citizens? Ellie041505 13:29, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

You must be 21 and a legal citizen of the US to be on TAR. I'm pretty sure you can't be from Canada, but I may be wrong. TeckWizTalkContribs# of Edits 13:44, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Every single TAR contestant to date has been an American citizen; this is required for getting visas, etc for all the international travel. If they accepted Canadians, I'd have already tried out! Radagast 03:14, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject The Amazing Race

I'm suggesting creating a WikiProject for The Amazing Race. If you agree with me, go to Wikipedia:WikiProject/List of proposed projects#WikiProject The Amazing Race TeckWiz is 12 yrs oldTalkContribs# of Edits 19:36, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

New "Surprises"

This is more of a note, but with surprises being new to this race (where, in the first surprise, the first team was shockingly eliminated despite it not being a Pit Stop), it may be necessary to make a note on who was "surprised" during each leg in the Results chart. Only seeing future episodes will tell how important they are, but it is something to keep in mind early. -- CobraWiki 01:20, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

I'd say it's best to get a sense of how these will go; this one was an elimination, which can be marked on the chart as it was, with a particular note. If future 'surprises' go differently, we'll sort them out as they come. Radagast 03:16, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

What Happened to Bilal & Sa'eed

Where did they go??? Nothing was said on the show yet they disappeared.

They were eliminated before teams left for the detour.Tazz765 02:10, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
The teams had to go to a kiosk and pull out a tag stating when they would be leaving the next morning. Bilal and Sa'eed got there last, and got the tag that said "Last Team." Then they went over to Phil on the Amazing Race mat thing because they thought they were supposed to check in, but he eliminated them. Those awful, awful producers. They'll give BJ and Tyler a million chances, but won't even give Bilal and Sa'eed one. I'm off The Amazing Race forever. Eilicea 13:37, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
You do realize that the team finish order is out of the control of the producers, right? The team got stuck with a bad cab or whatever and got in last. Getting mad at the show for that is stupid. Otto4711 17:57, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Pit Stop? pit stop? pitstop?

What is the correct or preferred capitalization/spacing? All three were present in this article. IMHO it should be "Pit Stop," consistent with capitalizing Roadblock, Detour and Yield but whatever the accepted style it should be uniform throughout all the articles. Otto4711 08:12, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

"Pit Stop" with both words capitalized is the most correct in this case. Grammatically speaking, it could be argued that the double-capital is incorrect since it is not the proper name of a location (You would not say "We will meet at My House."). However, using Google to do a site search of the official site, "pitstop" is found only once, other capitalization and spacing variations are a bit less rare, but Pit Stop is used consistently throughout all seasons and found on several hundred pages. -- CobraWiki 01:27, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Leg 2 point of arrival

Currently the page has a reference to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for episode 2. But remember, the spoiler has the teams arriving by train over the Gobi. So, maybe the airport should be left out until, perhaps, they use it to leave UB.

Chateau d'If 01:28, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Plane but no bus, train etc.

How come we list the airports of departure and arrival, but not the bus depots, and the train stations, as well as any other form of transportation from a specific place? They all seem just as important as the other, so why do we only have airports? TeckWiz is 12 yrs oldTalkContribs# of Edits 02:24, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Well, to be complete then "yes" the arrival terminals should all be given if they are known. Certainly the mode of transportation is worth presenting. Chateau d'If 04:00, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

WE are always putting airports in the TAR articles. So why change it this time? And yes if we want to include the terminals (bus, etc., we are free to do so. Aeron Valderrama 04:26, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

is the race fixed

i don't believe that a couple of the contestants scaled the wall, especially the black girl, she was so tired just dangling there at the bottom there was no way she could've completed the climb.

No, the race is not fixed since it is against the law to fix a television competition.Tazz765 18:02, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Roadblock

Has the 6 roadblock limit been scrapped for this season. phil never mentioned that "no team member can perform more then 6 on the entire race"?

Also, is it neccessary to have recovering drug addicts next to Tyler & James? it is not used on-screen to describe there relationship, they are simply stated as being best friends—Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.42.75.30 (talkcontribs)

I don't know about the first part, put thanks for saying that the drug addicts aren't their caption on TV. I'm going to take that out now. Also, I know there is a section in that new Amazing Race Book called "The Real Rules". I haven't seen it, but maybe it's in their. TeckWiz is 12 yrs oldTalkContribs# of Edits 01:21, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
It wasn't mentioned at all by Phil last season, but was still in effect - it was mentioned by the teams ("I'll have to do this one", etc) in the final legs. I'd presume it's still in effect, though I wonder how the RB in the first leg here will affect the total. Radagast 18:56, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Tyler & James met in rehab, so that's why it says that. "Recovering Drug Addicts/Models/Best Friends" is probably too long a caption to put on the show, though. I don't remember them mentioning the six-Roadblock rule in TAR9, either, but it clearly was in effect. Eilicea 14:26, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Wrong Time

Anybody else notice that for Edwin & Godwin's departure time it said "7:02pm". Despite the fact that they left 6th or 7th, and the earlier teams left at 9:xxpm. Im guessing they meant 10:02pm since the next team left at 10:07pm. Just wondering if any one else caught that. Amazingracer 01:37, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Did anybody else notice that for Duke & Lauren it said "First Team" when they were in fact last, and Erwin & Godwin had already checked in as the first team? Those producers should be more careful. Eilicea 14:31, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

In-Race

In Leg 2, teams were instructed in the Roadblock clue to go to the Pit Stop once finished with the task, instead of a Route Info clue telling them to go to the Pit Stop.

Is this is really needed? In the past, some roadblock clue also told them go straight to the pitstop once they finish their challenge. --Aleenf1 06:15, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Indeed. It's happened on Detours, as well, and likely with other tasks. Not worthy of a mention, as these go. Radagast 18:59, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm almost sure this happened last season, during the Statue Building Roadblock (aka Lori's Meltdown). They had to go to the statue thing, and run straight to the Pit Stop at the temple.Letoofdune 20:06, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
That was one instance where, with the Pit Stop within a mile's run, it would have made most sense to tell racers to go straight there. But I specifically remember clues being handed out after they were done with the statue. Times when teams WERE told to go straight to the PS after finishing the task include Season 8, Leg 2 (Pennsylvania-Virginia), and the final legs of Season 8 and Season 9. HansTAR

Re another leg 2 trivia thing, was David and Mary's vehicle replacement the first vehicle replacement for non-breakdown incapacity and if so, worthy of mention? 205.141.247.28 17:38, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm just rattling this from memory, but in season 7, Brian and Greg flipped their car in Africa (where the cameraman got injured). They got a replacement car, but they didn't have a mechanical breakdown/flat tire/empty tank/etc. --Bdsmith 20:34, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Relationship

Maybe this is overly picky, but the heading "Relationship" in the table of racers is not terribly accurate. Terms such as "Models" and "Cheerleaders" do not really describe relationships. I don't know of a good alternative, but I thought I'd throw this out for discussion. 66.215.75.10 02:47, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

The discription is a little unspecific, but thats the relationship that they are desrcibed as having. Tyler and James are listed as Models, not Friends, etc so i suppose thats all we really have to go on

City count

This reads 6 at the moment. I count Seattle, Beijing, and Ulanbataar - what are the other 3? Radagast 03:11, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

I believe that for Leg 2, they are counting Erenhot, where the teams went by train, and Terelj and Gorkhi as the others. UWAFanatic05 07:22, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

style prefer?

As The Amazing Race come through to Season 10. Now at this time, another problem is, somebody reformatting the style, which is completely different from pass. So, which style we prefer, should someone set the standard style? --Aleenf1 15:38, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Straw Poll on changing where tasks are described

This is a straw poll to gauge opinion on whether the descriptions of tasks should be below the city where the task is performed (see this revision), or whether to keep them at the bottom of each leg (see this revision)..

Please sign your name using four tildes (~~~~) with either Support (changing) or Oppose(keeping at bottom), additonal comments are appreciated. TeckWiz is 12 yrs oldTalkContribs# of Edits 16:40, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Support

  • Support: Since I was the one who made the change (in order to provoke discussion, but I was called away before I was able to edit the discussion page), I support the change. I think that the information for each section of the leg should be kept together. However, I'll support the final result of the straw poll. -- ArglebargleIV 17:33, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Support: It might be easier to lookat at the Detour place and the task one after the other. Aeron Valderrama 06:42, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Oppose

Oppose TeckWiz is 12 yrs oldTalkContribs# of Edits 16:40, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Oppose. The proposed revision breaks the flow of the article. Separate the basic itinerary from the tasks, as it always has been. --Madchester 23:09, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
    • If that is continued, then maybe the tasks could be broken out in sub-bullets instead of lumped together in one paragraph? -- ArglebargleIV 03:04, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose. I like the style of having first the itinerary, and then followed by a descriptive paragraph of the tasks. --Maelwys 14:33, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

TAR 10: First Mongolia visit

I attempted to add a trivia note that TAR's visit to Mongolia was the first Mongolia visit in the history of the show. User Aleenf1 has twice deleted this trivia note. I would like to note in the Trivia section the Mongolia visit, as well as any other countries that the show might be visiting this season for the first time. Vidor 01:25, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

I noticed this also. I think he or she thinks you're going to add a bullet for each city. I think it should be one bullet for all the cities, which is probably what you think also. TeckWiz is 12 yrs oldTalkContribs# of Edits 01:35, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
My idea was to note, in a single bullet, all the countries that TAR visits this time around that are first visits. China and Vietnam are both countries TAR has been to before this season. Without giving away spoilers, I'm pretty sure there are one or two more countries that TAR will be visiting for the first time this season. That's my idea. Vidor 01:37, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
From the CBS press release, Mongolia, Kuwait, and Madagascar will at least be three new countries this season. If the spoilers for Mauritius and Finland are true, then that would bring the total to five new countries. UWAFanatic05 01:50 2 October 2006 (UTC)
I'd heard about Kuwait and Madagascar. I'd like to have all those countries listed in one bullet. Vidor 02:29, 2 October 2006 (UTC) 02:28, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Last season (Season 9), we have Greece, Oman and Japan as the new countries in Amazing Race history, they haven't note down. In this world, we have or over 200 countries in this world, should the country which in first visit noted down all? I think that is rediculous. --Aleenf1 04:09, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
What does last season have to do with this season? And why are you talking about "200 countries in this world"? We're not talking about 200 countries, we're talking about a probable maximum of five, all of which can be listed in a single bullet. What I want to know is, if I put that trivia note back again, are you going to delete it again? Vidor 05:09, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
I would, all TAR article stay in same, except it already or in discussion. In past the trivia do not have noted down the countries which in first visit, so it also wouldn't in this season. --Aleenf1 05:16, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Fine. Then I'll have to go back and add "first visit" trivia notes for every single season, Seasons 2 through 9. In the meantime, I will start a vote, on this discussion page below, as to whether or not that information should be included in this article. Vidor 05:25, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Spoilers in the Article?!?!?!?

As I am watching Leg 3 now, (it started late due to NFL coverage) I see the results for the leg already on the page. I smell SPOILERS!!! (By the way, CBS.com does not update until a few minutes after the show ends on the West Coast.) Bobman123 01:30, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

I was just going to start a topic on this! I'm EDT so I thought that I'm the first people to see it. However, the results were put in before they aired. Maybe the feed someone was watching wasn't taking commercials to make up for the overrun. TeckWiz is 12 yrs oldTalkContribs# of Edits 01:33, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

No, TeckWiz, I think that the winners may be involved here, or, perhaps, producers or someone close with the show. Bobman123 01:41, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

It may not have started late in all areas on the Eastern and Central time zones -- if the afternoon NFL game was blacked out, then 60 Minutes and the Amazing Race would start at the normal time, and somebody from there would have been able to update the page before AR ended in your locality. -- ArglebargleIV 02:58, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Correct. In Canada, for example, it's on a channel that doesn't play the football game, so we were able to watch our local feed at the normal time, instead of time delayed. And somebody updated the standings based on the normal times (so likely, somebody watching a Canadian feed). --Maelwys 10:18, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

It was me - I was watching the Canadian feed on CTV, and was updating the article as the show went on. (The reason "1st" showed up in the table is because I'm not all that familiar with table wikicodes. the information was available and verifiable, it's just that I didn't know how to go about re-setting the table.) Maybe, in order to avoid things like this, we should wait until 21:00 PST (00:00 EST) - a la CBS - to update the site? Torontois 16:30, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Great idea Torontois, we do not want to ruin the show for the West Coast viewers. Bobman123 00:47, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

As long as there is a spoiler warning, any material is allowed on Wikipedia. Once a piece of information has reached the public domain, it can be included in a article. Agree with Madchester. TeckWiz is 12 yrs oldTalkContribs# of Edits 11:17, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Madchester as well. Tazz765 19:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Madchester as well. If those on the West Coast see this, it's their problem to ruin the show for themselves. Bobman123 01:37, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

But, if the standings are updated, why not the route markers? It would make sense to update everything at once. (I apologize for my use of capitals and excessive punctuation in the title and my first comment in this section.) Bobman123 01:46, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Edit Conflicts

Okay. I know I'm probably not the only one who gets made when the edit conflict screen pops up. To avoid this, during the show and right after the show ends, we should make sure only to edit by section, and if possible sub-section. Poll on "first visit" dispute

I wished to have an item in the Trivia section noting the countries that TAR has visited for the first time. User Aleenf1 chose to delete this item from the article twice, apparently on the grounds that other articles on other seasons don't have this trivia item. I have no idea what the relevance of other seasons' articles is to this one, and I have not seen any directive stating that the articles for each season of the show must be exactly the same. In any case, I would like to have a poll on whether or not to note in the Trivia section the countries where TAR 10 make the franchise's first visit. I obviously vote Yes and user Aleenf1 obviously votes No. Anyone else with an opinion please vote here. Vidor 06:04, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Tentative No - it's not about "sameness", it's about consistency from one article about one season to the next. If you guys want to add "This is the first time TAR has visited X-Country", this is fine, but then what should we do for early seasons? TAR1? "This is the first time T.A.R. has visited Zambia, Italy, France, Morocco, India, etc." It would get less ridiculous as time goes on, granted, but if we're going for that kind of trivia, then we'd have to make it the same throughout the 10 articles. Consistency-wise (holy Newspeak, Batman!), it would look too cluttered at the beginning of the articles. Just my opinion. Torontois 16:39, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Well, throwing out TAR1 as an example is totally ridiculous. And I still fail to see any reason whatsoever to not note new countries in the Trivia section just because no one's thought to do it for any other season. Must I go through Seasons 2-9 and add a Trivia line item for each? Vidor 23:24, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Don't get defensive, Vidor - you asked for an opinion, and you got one. TAR1 is perfectly legitimate, imho. Getting back to the point, at what point, then, did TAR start going to "old" countries more consistently, and new countries started being more "treats" within the series? That's another n'other debate, which brings us back to TAR1. Torontois 02:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
No, it's not legitimate, because naturally every country was visited for the first time in TAR1, because that was the first show. It's not relevant to the main question, but really, it's silly to bring up TAR1 in this context. Vidor 05:30, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Against Such listing opens up a can of worms, as stated by Torontois above. For example, that would allow editors to add things like "First alpha male team", "first gay couple", first "mother-daughter team", etc. for the first season. WP:NOT does not allow lists of indiscriminate information for such reasons. --Madchester 17:40, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
