Conversion to Christianity[edit]

The following sentence in the article is a sweeping assertion given with no supporting evidence. "In dejection, many of the Ezhavas embraced Christianity, making the Christian population of Travancore increase from six lakhs in 1901 to 17 lakhs by 1931". I am not aware of a three-fold increase in the Christian population of Travancore in the first three decades of the 20th century as a result of conversion of Eshavas. If such a thing had happened, it needs to be highlighted for historians and sociologists to study it in depth. A reference to the census data from both years will be a better source. Given the large 30 year period, a comparison with general population increase in the state will be helpful. The claim cannot be supported by another claim made in that site/book.

Temple entry proclamation[edit]

Mahathma Gandhi visited Travancore in 1924 or 1925 for the creating a social awareness for the uplift of Daliths.At this occasion prince Baala-Rama-Varma,who was just a 12 years old boy at that time, came to see him.To the boy Gandhiji said "One day you will become the king of this land.Then will you open the gates of the temple to the Daliths? " The boy replied "Ofcourse".When he became the king, he put the issue of 'temple entry' for vote in SreeMoolam-Praja-Sabha (The Travancore Parliament), but failed for one vote.Many superior-cast members voted in favour of the bill.That critical failing vote was done by an highly orthodox ezhavan, who believed that sacredness of the temples will be lost once these people enter.At this point King BRV issued 'Temple entry proclamation' as a decree in 1936, by which all places of hindu worship in Travancore should be opened to all classes(castes) of hindus.Mahathma Gandhi hailed travancore as his Piligrim-land(theerthadana-bhoomi).The starting clause the proclamation says that it is against the principles of sanathana-dharma to differentiate a person based on the cast in which he was born.

As far as I have heard, Ezhavas(Shiva is the chief deity of their tribe(kula-devatha) from prehistoric times) never embraced Christianity in large masses.Some accepted latin Catholic faith from Portuguese missionaries on their own for different reasons.Some returned to Hinduism after getting free European style education,which was enough for getting a copy writer's job in Madras or Bombay.

Lower cast people once tried to convert to Buddhism in large masses for political reasons(as did by Dr.B.R.Ambedkar), which was stopped by SreeNarayanaGuru, saying "conversion is not necessary for spiritual freedom". 117.192.144.173 (talk) 14:17, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
