Sinecure[edit]

By the end of its existence, the office had clearly become a sinecure - George Grenville (the future 1st Marquess of Buckingham) was appointed at the age of 11! Yet we describe its duties as if they continued to exist. Is there any source as to when this office stopped involving any actual work? Proteus (Talk) 18:26, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. It looks as though, by the end of the period, each Teller appointed a deputy or clerk, who had a first and second clerk working under him, and these performed the actual duties of the office, such as they were. (A not uncommon pattern for finance sinecures.) Just looking at the appointees, I suspect the tellerships had already become sinecures by the time of the Restoration. Sir John Sainty's "Officers of the Exchequer" might be a good starting point to determine the transition. Choess (talk) 15:52, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
