Propose merge[edit]

Yes, if the nickname doesn't translate internationally then this title is probably better. Whichever way the merge goes, I note that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanitary_napkin doesn't have any mention of the tax issue..? Happypoems (talk) 12:09, 11 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support merge: neutral on final article title, as long as there's a redirect from the other title. It's great that two editors have developed new articles on this missing topic, just a pity that they started at just the same time so we've got two parallel articles at the moment! I think there are two distinct questions:
  • Which way do we "merge", ie which article keeps its page history more visible, has the original "created by", etc?
  • What title do we choose for the resulting article - we can move from one to the other, so this is independent of the first question.

For info: Tampon tax was started as a draft 23:47, 10 December 2016‎ , and moved to mainspace 02:49, 11 December 2016‎; Tax on feminine hygiene products was started as a draft 13:26, 10 December 2016‎ and moved to mainspace 05:47, 11 December 2016‎ . So, if we wanted to take into account whether one was the "older" article, I'm not sure how you'd count it: first draft, or first into mainspace? Interesting!   • Yep, smush 'em together. Tampon tax is the common name by my estimation (see all sources in the article, and I have a separate directory of dozens more sources that primarily know the concept by this name). I've comparatively not found another name with similar recognition for the concept. And since tampon tax is already longer and contains more detailed versions of the same content, all that I'd merge from Tax on feminine hygiene products right now is the Kenya part. (Also happy to dump those other collected sources somewhere if need be—edit: here) I am no longer watching this pageping if you'd like a response czar 05:50, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hmm, the content on Tampon tax is better. (I don't mind if my content is replaced). But can we keep the neutral page name? I have not heard the term "Tampon Tax" used here in Southeast Asia. If I remember correctly, the tax on sanitary pads was an issue in Malaysia during the GST introduction (but it was never referred to as "Tampon Tax"). I also noticed that the term is used within quotes even by BBC - possibly due to the recent campaign? Personally I prefer a more encyclopaedic name which can be related to in other places of the world as well which don't use the term [1], [2], [3], and also the well cited papers on this issue such as this don't seem to use "Tampon tax". --Lemongirl942 (talk) 08:02, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's longer and less specific, but I don't think that makes it more neutral. My impression is that "tampon tax" came into circulation with global awareness of how tampons and sanitary pads are taxed—hence most of our coverage—so mainly 2015 and (especially) 2016. I imagine the simpler name also helped awareness. From the English-language sources as of 2016, I think it's clear that "tampon tax" is the common name (here's my aforementioned list of sources in addition to what's I already put in the tampon tax article), but if you have more recent sources along the lines of what you posted, I'm open to reconsidering. czar 18:49, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I support these articles being merged. I believe regarding Wikipedia's naming article naming convention that article should be title "Tampon tax" The naming convention states to use the more commonly recognizable name. I know someone stated it is not recognized in southeast Asia but this English Wikipedia and the majority of the English speaking world recognizes the phrase "Tampon Tax." This can be seen in a Google search of the amount hits per phrase where "Tampon Tax" will get ten the amount of hits compared to "Tax on feminine hygiene products." I recognize that the proposal for this merger happened four months ago. It would be great to see this page merged to Tampon Tax and a redirect to that page soon.E741776u (talk) 02:15, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
