Spelling of husband's surname[edit]

The photo of the gravestone showed the full name of Tookoolito's husband as "Joseph Eberbing"; why is it spelt Ebierbing throughout the article? 218.208.195.161 (talk) 01:14, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Joe" Ebierbing's name was consistently spelled so in his lifetime (a Google Books search will show as much). His actual Inuktitut name would have been Ipiirvik in modern orthography, but Charles Francis Hall heard and spelled it out as "Ebierbing," and since Hall's published accounts were the first to gain him fame, that has remained the standard one in all modern references, even though Joe and Hannah themselves often spelled it without the "i" (which is probably why that's how it appears on the headstone).
