Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on June 21, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the swellshark bends its body in a U-shape and sucks in water to double in size and avoid attacks from predators?

Untitled[edit]

>> Sometimes they are caught by sport divers but they are not used.

WTF is this supposed to mean? Used? Something is lacking. --Scnt2labor (talk) 02:33, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Swellshark vs Swell shark[edit]

Can someone clarify if it is swellshark or swellshark? Article seems to use both 132.239.112.44 (talk) 22:00, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review[edit]

This review is transcluded from Talk:Swellshark/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

This article needs a lot of work. Was originally going to quickfail, but I'll give the editor the benefit of the doubt. I've left some starter suggestions below, will check back later to gauge progress. Sasata (talk) 19:38, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Prose needs cleaning up; it's very choppy, and has several grammar errors and poorly constructed phrases. Suggest getting someone else to copyedit after the information has been expanded.
  • The coverage is barely adequate; the article fails to cite several papers published in scholarly publications that could be used to provide more information. Examples:
  • How does the swellshark generate suction for feeding?

Title: Suction generation in white-spotted bamboo sharks Chiloscyllium plagiosum Author(s): Wilga, CD; Sanford, CP Source: JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY Volume: 211 Issue: 19 Pages: 3128-3138 Published: 2008

  • What is the relationship between C. ventriosum and C. uter?

Title: A re-description of the eastern Pacific swellshark, Cephaloscyllium ventriosum (Garman 1880) (Chondrichthyes : Carcharhiniformes : Scyliorhinidae), with comments on the status of C. uter (Jordan & Gilbert 1896) Author(s): Silva, JASD; Ebert, DA Source: ZOOTAXA Issue: 1872 Pages: 59-68 Published: 2008

  • How about a few words about the evolution of skeleton development in this species?.

Title: Skeletogenesis in the swell shark Cephaloscyllium ventriosum Author(s): Eames, BF; Allen, N; Young, J, et al. Source: JOURNAL OF ANATOMY Volume: 210 Issue: 5 Pages: 542-554 Published: MAY 2007

  • What type of phylogenetic analysis has been performed on this species? How does relate with other sharks?

Title: Specification of phylogenetic interrelations between skate-rays and sharks Author(s): Dosay-Akbulut, M Source: JOURNAL OF EVOLUTIONARY BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHYSIOLOGY Volume: 42 Issue: 2 Pages: 128-133 Published: MAR-APR 2006

  • Anything to say about shark physiology specific to this species? How does ventilation work?

Title: Mechanics of ventilation in swellsharks, Cephaloscyllium ventriosum (Scyliorhinidae) Author(s): Ferry-Graham, LA Source: JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY Volume: 202 Issue: 11 Pages: 1501-1510 Published: JUN 1999

  • More details about feeding behavior (Hatchling and juveniles):

Title: Feeding kinematics of hatchling swellsharks, Cephaloscyllium ventriosum (Scyliorhinidae): the importance of predator size Author(s): Ferry-Graham, LA Source: MARINE BIOLOGY Volume: 131 Issue: 4 Pages: 703-718 Published: JUL 1998 Title: Feeding kinematics of juvenile swellsharks, Cephaloscyllium ventriosum Author(s): FerryGraham, LA Source: JOURNAL OF EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY Volume: 200 Issue: 8 Pages: 1255-1269 Published: APR 1997

  • Any specific physiological or biochemical adaptations that help this species adapt to the low-oxygen environment in which it dwells?

Title: ADULT AND FETAL HEMOGLOBINS IN THE OVIPAROUS SWELL SHARK, CEPHALOSCYLLIUM-VENTRIOSUM Author(s): KING, LA Source: COMPARATIVE BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHYSIOLOGY B-BIOCHEMISTRY & MOLECULAR BIOLOGY Volume: 109 Issue: 2-3 Pages: 237-243 Published: OCT-NOV 1994

  • taxonomy section needs more info. Who first described it? What publication? Where was it first found? Link Greek. What does "skylla" mean? MOS says foreign-language words needs to be italicized.
  • what species are related/closely similar to it?
  • "Swellsharks have a dorsal fin that is rounded located in the pelvic area." Sounds run-on
  • "Every swellshark has around 55-60 teeth, which contains mostly small teeth." using ndash for number ranges (other examples throughout article); prose is poor.
    • Replaced all ndash's with mdash's.--Giants27 (c|s) 20:41, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • consistently give units in both metric and imperial by using the convert template
    • Added conversion templates.--Giants27 (c|s) 20:41, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Swellsharks frequent aquariums..." Not sure what is meant by this.. they frequently visit aquariums? I've never seen one near my aquarium. Needs clarification.
  • Don't use contractions (i.e. it's, they'll) in formal writing
  • "Despite this, the swellshark is listed as Least Concern by the World Conservation Union." reference?
  • The diet, behavior, and reproduction sections are small. Effort should be made to expand them, and it may be worth considering putting them all as subsections of a bigger section called "Biology and ecology"
  • Ref 1 needs a page number; need author and publisher information for refs 2 and 3
    • Removed ref1 as I don't have the book (already there when I start expanding it), and added publisher/work info for ref 2 and ref 3 no individual author mentioned I believe.--Giants27 (c|s) 21:06, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Animal, Smithsonian Institution, 2005" -> what is this doing in the refs? Also, put the fishbase link as a reference or as an external link; italicize the Latin name.
    • Removed smitsonian one, didn't notice that was there and using FishBase link to help expand article.--Giants27 (c|s) 20:50, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • as mentioned before, the prose needs work but I don't want to get into too much detail yet before more info is added.

I will have to fail the article at this time. Some effort was put into cleaning up the prose and making some other fixes, but the major drawback of the article still remains: it needs to be more fully developed to give a better coverage about what is known about the swellshark. Feel free to resubmit for GAN after this has been addressed. Sasata (talk) 16:28, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
