Cause of Death[edit]

After two days of rain delays, the race was held Wednesday May 30. On his 58th lap, just after a pit stop, Savage lost control coming out of turn four and hit the inside wall. The car was demolished and caught fire, burning the full fuel load of nearly 75 gallons. Savage was taken to the hospital with relatively minor injuries but serious burns. He died of pneumonia in the hospital 33 days later on July 2.

Minor injuries? He had multiple compound fractures of his legs, and the burns to his right hand (his right-hand Nomex glove had been pulled off in the crash) would have necessitated the amputation of his right hand. Gravely injured in the 1973 Indy 500, when he lost control of his car & it disintegrated into flames & fibre, "Swede" passed away about a month later, from pneumonia, after his kidneys failed.

Request Removal of Savage from List of racing drivers who died in racing crashes[edit]

Technically, Savage survived the crash, and lived on for months, until he succumbed to contaminated blood during transfusion. Therefore, the crash should not be blamed for Savage's death. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IViking (talk • contribs) 21:38, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
