Untitled[edit]

How come bands from Canada have been ignored, and every attempt to create pages for them get erased? Genre issues[edit]

yeah, no mention of jackie and the cedrics or enocky. im pretty sure that those guys were huge in japan.

Hmmmm... surf music currently redirects here, but this article is explicitly not about the instrumental tracks such as that are at least as important as a type of surf music. Something to fix. Andrewa 21:11, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmm... And The Chantays are described in their article as surf rock, despite being a one-hit wonder with the epitomy of surf music instrumental tracks, Pipeline. They did tracks with vocals too, but it's a bit strange to describe a band famous only for an instrumental as belonging to a genre that specifically excludes instrumental music, surely? Hmmmm and hmmmm... the whole thing is a bit of a mess IMO. Category:surf is a subcategory of Category:Pop music genres, and contains a few surf music articles.

I think the thing to do is to write a high-level article at surf music covering all surf music, including instrumental, surf pop and surf rock, and linking to the other articles. Also create a corresponding category:surf music, perhaps with some subcategories for subgenres, bands, individual songs etc. in time assuming there is a large enough number of articles to justify them. And, that's what I've been doing! Except I note that the protocol for deleting a category is not to depopulate it first, owing to the fact that there's no easy way to view the full history of a category i.e. what used to be in it. In the early 1960s, one of the most popular forms of rock and roll was surf rock, a form of surf music not to be confused with surf instrumental. Surf instrumental is characterized by its heavy use of reverb on the guitars, tremolo picking, catchy melodies, hooks, riffs and rhythms. The spring reverb featured in Fender amplifiers of the day, cranked to its maximum volume, produced a guitar tone shimmering with sustain, vibrato and tremolo, and evoking surf and ocean imagery, or giving the listener the feeling that they are surfing.

I think I know what it's trying to say, but it's neither encyclopedic nor accurate, and seems confused as to whether or not what is being described is instrumental music. I've always been given to understand that surf-rock was specifically instrumental rather than the other way around. The only band I can think off that's categorised as 'surf' and often used vocals was The Beach Boys.Stratpod 21:58, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jan & Dean. The whole article is a hoax. Most of the information are taken from the lousy surfguitar101 fansite where teenagers think about what surf music should be but never was. Surfing was only one specific theme in a bunch of rock & roll instrumentals that where about hot rodding , outer-spacing, a little rebelling or hundreds of teen dances with all those stomps, twists, birds, hops and mashed potatoes presented by the clean and healthy American Bandstand. While the bands changed their themes from track to track their music never did. It was mostly commercialized music for the first post world-war II generation of white anglo-saxon protestants in an economic wealth. A male consumer generation chanting "Fun Fun Fun". The songs were instrumentals and dealing with the main interests of teenagers belonging to their leisure time. Has this something to do with punk and anarchy in the manner of The Dead Kennedys or the sarcastic sense of humor in the manner of the Ramones? Absolutely not. But the funniest thing I ever read was: Horror Surf...wuahahahahah! Have you ever seen the the film Surf Nazis Must Die? The soundtrack is a must have! It is an cool example of Nazi Surf! Sniff.....! Hey, I am planing to do the film The Pandleton Massacre with Gidget as the Beaten Brat...hi...hi. Telstar is Space Surf....hihihihi...wuahahahahaha...sniff. Poor Joe Meek. Sorry, but this article is bare shit. Go home and read a book about popular music! Then come back and write a good article about Surf Music and instrumental Rock & Roll.

Space Rock??[edit]

Space rock, according to the wikipedia article, is a subgenre of progressive rock. I don't think Marillion is an example of surf rock. Better to call it space surf.

The "Example Surf Artist" section is unweildy and full of red links. Howsabout jes deleting most of the less obvious examples (keep: Beach Boys, ditch: The Bambi Molesters)? The "List of Surf Rock Musicians" link would continue to do justice to all you "Sh-sh-sh-shark attack!!!" fans. --Oyster 12:32, 17 August 2007

The Pyramids[edit]
