"The most important Super Bowl ever played"[edit]

The first paragraph makes the assertion "This game is regarded as...the most important Super Bowl ever played." Although I don't object to the assertion, the article needs to justify it. Someone reading the article, in my opinion, would not learn why the game was any more important than any other Super Bowl. It's true the game was an upset, but so was Super Bowl IV (Chiefs/Vikings). It's true the AFL was regarded as inferior, but it was still regarded as inferior for Super Bowl IV (many thought Super Bowl III a fluke). The justification I have seen is that if the NFL team (the Colts) won Super Bowl III, especially in a blowout as the Packers did in Super Bowls I and II, the wisdom of the NFL/AFL merger would have been called into question, and the very existence of the Super Bowl itself might have been jeopardized. I think the article needs to state what the consequences of a Colts victory, especially a blowout, in Super Bowl III might have been. In other words, what was so important about the Jets' victory? How about we just agree that it is "The most important Super Bowl ever played (by the Jets)". :) I think this Super Bowl was important in that it got more exposure than the previous two, and helped lead (with SBIV) to acceptance of the AFL teams. However, I can see removing "most important" and replacing with "pivotal", or some other synonym for "league changing". CodeCarpenter 15:03, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No Controversy has Arisen from Shula's Decision Not to Kick a Field Goal late in the game[edit]

I removed this entire section with the above title because it is not NPOV. While the authors may have a valid point, Wikipedia is not the place to do that. Makes for an interesting blog post, though. —Twigboy 14:55, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ridiculous Number of Interceptions[edit]

Error In Text[edit]

The first paragraph about the Baltimore Colts seems to have lost a line or two of text. After starting the discussion about Johnny Unitas, there is a shift to mention of Don Shula keeping Earl Morrall as the starting quarterback. National Anthem Performance[edit]

The article as current shown listed Anita Bryant as national anthem performer. However, I recently watched an upload of Super Bowl III on YouTube; and following the pledge of allegiance, Lloyd Geisler; a trumpet player for the National Symphony Orchestra was shown playing the anthem on trumpet. As long as Bryant continues to be listed on a reliable source like http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/history/entertainment , editors will always try to edit this Wikipedia article to match that. Whatever YouTube video you are watching, it may be considered a violation of Wikipedia:Verifiability#Copyright and plagiarism if the YouTube user who uploaded that video did so without the league's permission (especially since Super Bowl III is one of the 20+ classic Super Bowl games available on its NFL Game Rewind subscription service) -- and thus would disqualify it as a reliable source. I'm not sure what the ultimate solutions would be (since the video on NFL Game Rewind edits that performance out) beyond trying to contact NFL.com to have them change it there. You could try to find a newspaper article listing Geisler, but the page at NFL.com listing Bryant is more accessible, and considered more official, to most Wikipedia editors. I have seen many sources that report that Anita Bryant was the anthem performer, while others report Lloyd Geisler was. However, watching the footage of the broadcast shows Lloyd Geisler performed the anthem alone. So reports of Bryant having been the anthem performer appear erroneous (though commonplace). Current lead section[edit]

The lead section is currently 7 paragraphs. Is there some reason why all this WP:TRIVIA and facts need to be there, especially a lot of facts and trivia regarding the aftermath following the AFL-NFL merger? In order to keep these Super Bowl articles within the general 4 paragraph limit per WP:LEADLENGTH, and remove a lot of the trivia, I have in the past used a format for the lead on these Super Bowl articles. The format was:

  • Paragraph 1: Basic info and identification of the teams, stadium, city, and date.
  • Paragraph 2: Short summary on the background of the teams.
  • Paragraph 3: Short summary of the game, roughly 4-6 sentences long.
  • Paragraph 4: Brief overview of TV, entertainment, and other most important points.

Historical Error[edit]

This sentence is incorrect, although it is commonly cited as truth: "Although publicized as the inter-league championship games, it was not until later that the moniker for this championship contest between the now two conferences (National and American) began having the nickname of "Super Bowl" applied to it by the media."
