"based out of New York City"[edit]

I'm going to make a example of this expression from the lede, but the truth is I see it all over Wikipedia. What in the world does "based out of" mean? Nearly all musicians, i.e. people who make a living performing music, are...mobile...peripatetic...wanderers...vagabonds...To say they are "based" somewhere is meaningless. Do you mean "from"? Do you mean the band was formed in a particular place, had its origin there, and that's where the band is from? Its birthplace, so to speak. Or do you mean the band lives in a particular place from which it never strays? Or do you mean that's where the band's business headquarters are? Or where the band keeps its money? Or where the band keeps its pillows and toothbrushes. I have endured many absurd arguments on Wikipedia about the definition of the word "from". Call it a sign of the times. The total breakdown of consensus over even the most trivial matters. Why do I, a reader, need to know where a band is "based"? Why do I need to know where they are right now? Are you sure you know? Are you saying you know where the band members are at this second, and it's imperative that you tell that to readers? Why? Giving a hand to stalkers, maybe? Helping the stalkerazzi get their fix? Is it because you saw someone else write that expression, so you assumed without thinking you had to imitate them? Do you believe everything you read? Because words are, like, magical, dude? "Birds of a feather" is a strong motive. And why is it so difficult to distinguish between jazz and progressive rock when the two genres have nothing in common? Anyone who isn't deaf can tell the difference. If you want help, click on my name. If your feelings are too hurt to move, don't bother; you're incapable of learning.
