Untitled[edit]

Regarding the latest edit, STIPEND in Malta is used differently than other countries. It is given to MOST students attending university, not just research assistants etc. Therefore its mention is sure of notability. Maltesedog 12:21, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do we want this article to say? At the moment it says nothing and some very odd statements and some random one-off examples have been added. I know its needs a lot of work, but I mean a stipend in my island has a different sense than what you mean in the States. Its a grant given to students - to all students - not to researchers! Maltesedog 06:59, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maltesedog, I am not from the USA! I appreciate that stipend has a particular meaning in respect of universities in Malta - but there are different meanings everywhere. What is this article trying to achieve? The article should be generalised. Sandydance did u give on the matter? My idea is that stipend is not only given to research assistants in Malta, but also to students therefore this should be included in the article. I agree with all the general understanding of the word stipend, but it is a form of gratuity and not a payment of right but a voluntary pay by a donor to a donee, grantor to a grantee, and can incorporate all of the circumstances as already set out above. I am from Ireland and for as as I can recall it is used in many of the circumstance outlined above and can also include a payment to gravediggers in addition to whatever other payment they may receive if any. Normally paid by the bereaved family or the undertaker on their behalf. In the USA this is called a honorarium, I see in the Ireland and the UK that this non compulsory payment is called a stipend. May be should be add as this is not just a USA page.Telecine Guy 04:59, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
