Isn't the flechette projectile illegal per geneva treaty for military use? It is considered "unnecessarily causing excessive suffering" and thus banned, because the arrowlette bends circularly on impact and thus very difficult to remove from inside the body of the wounded. Therefore I doubt if a flechette rifle could ever participate in the US ACR competition! 195.70.32.136 20:04, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There was talk of banning them, but there is currently no restriction on their use. It is well documented that two flechette firing rifles (models from Steyr and AAI) participated in the ACR program. D.E. Watters 22:20, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

>"...none of the entrants managed to achieve performance 100% better than the M16A2"

What does this phrase mean? Surely a gun is assessed on a number of different criteria, so the phrase is undefined? Blaise 22:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It seems pretty hard to obtain information about the criteria and the results of the ACR competition. I believe it's about hit percentages considering how the estimated accuracy of a shooter on the battlefield under stress at 300m is said to be about 10% despite the M16A2's perfect accuracy at that distance in controlled circumstances. While the point was to increase hit probability under stress on a modern battlefield, I wasn't able to confirm this anywhere.
I'd also be interested in an animation of the Steyr ACR's internals as the concept sounds bewilderingly fascinating. --94.223.142.123 (talk) 16:24, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ballistic coefficient?[edit]

How well did the flechettes retain velocity? What was the ballistic coefficient, and which model was used to calculate it? I assume a finned dart would behave most like a pointed spitzer bullet, so my guess is that model G7 or G8 would be most appropriate for it, but I am only guessing here. Thank you.

Talk pages are more for discussion about the article than its subject, but assuming you're wanting to add this information to the article the answers are in the sources linked. Energy retention was good, 910m/s at 600 yards is almost 3x the velocity of 5.56 at the same range and ~60% of the muzzle velocity compared to a ratio of about 1/3 for 5.56. As for BC, thats a hard one. Arguably its closest to G6 because its not boat tailed (like the G7 is) and being closer to the nose length than the G8, but how applicable the model is to something so long and thin is unknown so it would not be up to the required standards for inclusion in the article. You can see a photo of the flechette itself here Khitrir (talk) 11:26, 6 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Neon Genesis Evangelion and other media[edit]

The ACR appeared as a weapon used by the titular battle constructs in Neon Genesis Evangelion. I’m sure it’s also appeared in other media. It is a very “scifi” looking weapon, often used in media as visual shorthand for a faction’s technological advancement. This, I feel, warrants some measure of inclusion in the article. 72.94.41.223 (talk) 10:43, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

1200 or 2200 rpm?[edit]

this source states that the acr shot its 3 rounds with 2200rpm https://web.archive.org/web/20120728232928/http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/ARupdates.htm FSbiran (talk) 22:59, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
