Film or Book Version of Marooned?[edit]

I've recently obtained a copy of James Oberg's Red Star in Orbit which describes the aftermath of the failed docking with Salyut 6 as follows:

Since the inoperative maneuvering engine was also used for returning to Earth, the Soyuz-33 crewmen were in genuine danger of being trapped in space until their air ran out in a few days. In fact, the commander (a veteran of the Apollo-Soyuz project named Rukavishnikov, who spoke fluent English) later admitted to thinking briefly about an American science fiction novel he had once read - Marooned by Martin Caidin - which was about space-station astronauts trapped in orbit by a faulty rocket engine.

Confusing description of re-entry burn?[edit]

How can it be that in one paragraph the burn is described as too long and in the following paragraph as too short? Granted, delta-v can be in any direction, but when we say "greater delta-v, steeper fall" we do introduce a number of assumptions that should not be immediately and silently dropped.Spamhog (talk) 20:55, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I wondered about that too. "the autopilot tried to run them until the proper delta V was achieved, but the cosmonauts issued a manual shutoff command after 213 seconds of burn time." So why didn't the autopilot shut the engine off at 188 seconds? Did the crew override the autopilot? Why? Kendall-K1 (talk) 14:33, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
