The article seems well-written and for the most part well-sourced. In my view it is too bad that the tag saying that "contains text from public domain source" is needed, to reveal that text is copied from the Accident Report source. It impugns the writing done throughout the article wikipedia editors, because it suggests any/all text was just copied. Can't the specific material from the one source be identified and put in proper quotes, then remove that tag, instead? Just because the source may be in the public domain does not mean that proper referencing is not needed. doncram (talk) 17:23, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Previous speed assignment cancelled automatically[edit]

The article reads:

According to the Aeronautical Information Manual, Section 4-4-11, this approach clearance automatically canceled any previous speed assignments.

Strangely, my copy of the FAR/AIM (2010) has no mention of this automatic speed-assignment-cancelling in section 4-4-11. Was this moved to a different section? Perhaps 4-4-10? - Eric (talk) 16:43, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it is mentioned in AIM Section 4-4-12f of the FAA online version 02-14-2008 incl. Changes 1-3.

That is one of those bits of knowledge that all pilots and controllers know, even if they haven't ever read it in any manual. Only the pilot knows what speed is safe for the approach, on his particular aircraft, size, weight, wind, weather, etc. all considered. Sometimes controllers will add something like "maintain 200 until the marker, cleared for the approach." That happens not too often, but when it does the pilot is supposed to tell the controller that he is unable, and to follow SOP which requires flaps, slats, and gear to be deployed no later than the OM. If the controller insists upon the plane remaining too high and/or too fast, until it is too close to the runway to make a final approach in a safe and legal manner, then the pilot has to go-around. That is mandatory. But the Captain in this accident decided to try and make it anyway. That is not just negligence; it amounts to willful misconduct in the cockpit and is why it was necessary to fire at least the Captain, if not the FO too. Apparently, the Company felt the FO also failed in his duties too, so both got fired. EditorASC (talk) 10:12, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

i happened to find a picture of the aircraft after the crash.
